“I think he should be manager” - Paul Scholes suggests 48-year-old coach deserves to be Manchester United boss ahead of Ruben Amorim
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has suggested that Ruud van Nistelrooy should be the club’s manager. The Dutchman was named interim manager at the Manchester club following the recent sacking of Erik ten Hag.
Since his interim appointment, Van Nistelrooy has led the Red Devils to three unbeaten games. In his first game in charge, Manchester United defeated Leicester City 5-2 in the Carabao Cup. They then played a 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the league before defeating POAK 2-0 in the Europa League.
A second-half brace from Amd Diallo helped the Red Devils record their first win in Europe this season on Thursday (November 7). Speaking after the win over POAK, Scholes praised Van Nistelrooy and said he deserves to be the club’s permanent manager.
“I think he should be manager,” Scholes said on TNT Sports (via The Peoples Person).
He continued:
“Just watching him in three games, he did well in Holland, he won the Dutch cup, he won other things, he just looks like he’s made to be a manager. I think he’s better than being an assistant manager, I think he should be managing a club.”
Ruud van Nistelrooy returned to Old Trafford in the summer as an assistant coach to Ten Hag. He previously served as manager at PSV Eindhoven, leading the club to win the Johan Cruyff Shield and the KNVB Cup.
It remains to be seen whether the Dutchman will continue as assistant manager under new head coach Ruben Amorim.
The Portuguese manager is set to assume his role at the club from November 11 onwards. Van Nistelrooy will take charge of his last game as interim manager when Manchester United face Leicester City in the Premier League on Sunday (November 10).
Paul Scholes backs Manchester United striker to flourish under Ruben Amorim
Speaking on the same platform, Paul Scholes backed Rasmus Hojlund to flourish under Ruben Amorim. He opined that the Danish player is capable of becoming a prolific striker under Amorim, just like Viktor Gyokeres.
“I was a little bit disappointed in Hojlund [tonight], he had a tough night, a difficult night. I think he will improve, I think he will get better once he’s coached by a coach who will believe I him,” Scholes said.
"I’m not saying Ruud doesn’t believe in him, but we’ve seen the effect that the centre forward has over in Sporting Lisbon and I think Hojlund is capable of that," he added.
Hojlund joined Manchester United in 2023 from Atalanta. The 21-year-old has yet to hit expected heights since moving to Old Trafford. He has managed 18 goals and two assists in 53 games.
