“I thought he was dead” - Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt open up on when Manchester United legend got knocked out during training

Manchester United legends Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt recalled an incident from their playing days when Sir Bobby Charlton was almost left unconscious in a training session. Scholes and Butt were part of the famous Class of '92. The former Manchester United midfielders played a crucial role in the club's dominance under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

They were also a part of the iconic side that won the treble in 1999. Speaking on the Football's Greatest Eras podcast, Scholes and Butt opened up about the time when former Manchester United star Brian McClair nearly knocked out Sir Bobby Charlton.

Butt said (via the Daily Mail):

"I thought he was dead. (It was a) full-on volley from five yards, flush on his head, and completely floored Sir Bobby Charlton, who survived the Munich air disaster. He survived all this stuff but nearly got killed off a Brian McClair volley."

Scholes and Butt then revealed that Charlton would train with the squad before 'nearly every European game' even years after he hung up his boots, and this incident did not stop him.

Hailing Charlton's technique even at that age, Butt said:

"Even though he was at the time, would have been 62 or something, I reckon, or roughly, early 60s, his touch and stuff was brilliant. And you're thinking a 60-odd-year-old man could still do that with elite footballers. And it's like, wow."

The Red Devils will next face Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday (21 September).

"It was enjoyable to watch" - Erik ten Hag hails Manchester United's performance in EFL Cup win over Barnsley

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag lauded his side for their performance in their 7-0 thrashing of League One side Barnsley in the third round of the EFL Cup.

The dominant victory saw Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Christian Eriksen grab a brace each while Antony converted a penalty at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag praised Rashford for his first goal, an excellent finish after dribbling past Barnsley defender Marc Roberts, before hailing the team for their display. The former Ajax boss said (via United in Focus):

"“(Rashford’s first of the night was a) brilliant goal. But also some other goals were also very good. The key was the shape and, of course, the right attitude. They were 100 per cent concentrated, so we played very good and it was enjoyable to watch."
