"I try to help the team like he did" - Moises Caicedo says he's trying to replicate what ex-Chelsea midfielder did for club at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo has expressed his admiration for former Blues star N’Golo Kante, calling the Frenchman his idol and a source of inspiration in his football journey.
Speaking to the BBC, Caicedo opened up about his aspirations to mirror Kante’s contributions to the team, highlighting the immense influence the former Chelsea midfielder has had on him.
"N’Golo Kante is my idol. I try to help the team like he did… he’s a very big player, and I try my best," he said.
The 23-year-old Ecuadorian has been a vital figure in Chelsea’s midfield this season. He has showcased his tireless work rate and defensive capabilities, qualities reminiscent of Kante's stellar career at Stamford Bridge.
Kante, now playing for Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad, is widely regarded as one of the finest defensive midfielders of his generation. His relentless energy, impeccable reading of the game, and humble demeanor made him a fan favorite at Chelsea. The 33-year-old played a pivotal role in the club’s Premier League and Champions League triumphs, among other honors.
Caicedo’s acknowledgement of Kante’s legacy comes as the Blues continue to rebuild under manager Enzo Maresca. The young midfielder is part of a new-look squad striving to return to the heights the club achieved with Kante at the heart of midfield.
After an impressive start to the season, Caicedo believes the team is on the right path and have set their sights high.
"We are enjoying it, we’re doing fantastic. The sky’s the limit," he added.
Chelsea within touching distance of toppling Liverpool as league leaders
The Blues continued their purple patch when they defeated Brentford 2-1 on Sunday (December 15) night. Goals from Marc Cucurella (43') and Nicolas Jackson (80') sealed the win for the home side.
However, they were met with some resistance as Brentford managed to pull one back in the 90th minute, giving the west London club a scare in the dying embers of the game. Cucurella was on the receiving end of the manager's ire after he was handed a red card at the end of the game.
The Blues are two points adrift of Liverpool after having played 15 games. The Reds, however, have an extra game in hand. Arne Slot's side will be hoping to increase their lead after a 2-2 draw with Fulham on the weekend (December 14).
