“I’ve always defended him but it’s gone too far now” - Liverpool icon urges Arne Slot to sell attacker

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann believes it could be time for the Reds to move on from striker Darwin Nunez.

The Uruguay international has been under fire throughout the season for missing a host of easy chances in front of goal. Overall, he made 54 appearances across competitions, bagging 18 goals while managing just 11 strikes in the league.

Such has been the form of Nunez since his arrival at Anfield from Benfica in the summer of 2022 for a reported £85 million. He's found the net on 33 occasions in 96 appearances across competitions for the Merseyside outfit.

Discussing Nunez's worrying form ahead of the new season, Hamann said (via @AnfieldEdition):

"I think there are still some doubts about Darwin. He (Slot) will need to make a decision there. Is he going to win you a league or a big title? I'm not too sure. I've always defended him, but I think it's gone too far now."

The 24-year-old still has four years left on his current deal at Anfield and it would cost a fair bit for any club interested in the player's services. However, new boss Arne Slot has options in that position to turn to.

He could play Portuguese attacker Diogo Jota in a false nine role or even deploy Dutch attacker Cody Gakpo as a more traditional number nine. If needed, Slot can also dip into the market for an out-and-out striker.

Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a move for Hoffenheim striker Maximilian Beier in the summer transfer window. As per Sportbild, the Reds are impressed by the youngster's ability to play in the false nine role and also do a job if asked to play on the flanks (via Liverpool Echo).

With Darwin Nunez's poor form, it is no surprise that the Merseysiders have been linked to a young attacking prospect. Moreover, the Germany international impressed in his first season in the Bundesliga this year, bagging 16 goals in 33 appearances.

Of course, if Liverpool come calling, it would seem like a no-brainer for the 21-year-old striker to complete the transfer. He would give himself the chance to compete for the Premier League and UEFA Champions League trophies at Anfield next season.

Beier's current contract with his German employers will keep him there till the summer of 2027.
