"I want to be the best defender in Europe" – Liverpool star points to objective after Reds begin Arne Slot era in style
Liverpool star Jarell Quansah has opened up on his dream of cementing himself as one of the best defenders in Europe in the future.
Quansah, 21, has emerged as one of the best young centre-backs in the Premier League since making his debut for the Reds last August. He has started 28 of his 34 appearances across all competitions for his boyhood club, registering three goals and as many assists so far.
During a recent interview with The Times, the Liverpool centre-back revealed his aspirations about becoming one of the best in his position. He said (h/t X/@FabrizioRomano):
"I want to be the best defender in Europe one day. I'm up against the best centre-halves in the world at Liverpool, in my opinion. I think I'll have to be one of the best centre-halves in Europe if I'm starting."
Remarking on how Reds captain Virgil van Dijk's guidance is currently helping him grow as a footballer, Quansah added (h/t This Is Anfield):
"The way Virgil talks you through the game, I've never heard anyone like it. He might annoy us at times but it's all for the greater good. With all the experience he has and the situations he's been in, it's only fair that he can share his knowledge so we can be the best players we can."
Quansah, whose Reds contract will expire in June 2027, concluded:
"It's always been the goal since I was young, I've always wanted to be the best in the world in my position and so I'm striving for that and it doesn't matter how long it takes, I'm not going to get too disheartened if it's not 2026 [FIFA World Cup]. I know what I need to do and hopefully I keep improving. The more and more games I play, it will come and it's about taking that opportunity."
How have Liverpool opened this season?
Liverpool, who parted ways with legendary manager Jurgen Klopp earlier this May, have opened the 2024-25 season on a positive note. Arne Slot's side have won all three of their Premier League games so far.
The Reds opened their ongoing campaign with a 2-0 league win at Ipswich Town on August 17. They followed their season-opening victory with yet another 2-0 win against Brentford at Anfield on August 25.
Earlier this month, Liverpool breezed past Manchester United in their third contest under Slot. They beat their rivals 3-0 at Old Trafford as Luis Diaz bagged a brace and Mohamed Salah scored in the second half.
