“If he accepts he can’t play 90 mins that will go a long way” - PL legend tells Cristiano Ronaldo to play reduced role to help Portugal win Euro 2024

Premier League legend Alan Shearer reckons Cristiano Ronaldo might have to accept a reduced role for Portugal at UEFA Euro 2024. He praised the legendary forward's attitude and desire but said that a reduced role for him could help the team win the trophy.

Portugal beat Czechia 2-1 in their Euro 2024 opener at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig on Tuesday, June 18. Lukas Provod gave Czechia a surprise lead in the 62nd minute with a brilliant strike. The Selecao equalised just seven minutes later through an own goal from Robin Hranac.

Roberto Martinez's side had a goal from Diogo Jota disallowed due to Cristiano Ronaldo being offside in the buildup. However, they found the winning goal in the second minute of stoppage time through substitute Francisco Conceicao.

After the game, Alan Shearer spoke about Ronaldo's role in this Portugal side, saying on BBC One:

"This is key to whether Portugal can go on and win the competition, because if he accepts he cannot play 90 minutes every game that will go a long way to them winning this.
"When waking up after games and having that desire to go again, when you are in pain, that hunger and desire to be the very best. Everyone speaks in glowing terms about his attitude, it is phenomenal."

Cristiano Ronaldo had a decent game against Czechia despite not registering a goal contribution. He attempted five shots, created one big chance, made two key passes, and had 100% pass accuracy but also missed one big chance.

Cesc Fabregas on Cristiano Ronaldo after Portugal's Euro 2024 win over Czechia

Former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas was also on BBC One and stressed the importance of Cristiano Ronaldo for this Portugal side. He praised the 39-year-old for how he takes care of himself and also his improved "overall play", saying:

"Whatever you do, if Ronaldo plays well or the team plays well, he always finds a chance.
"He takes care of himself to another level. He needs just one little moment of space to create a chance. His overall play has been much better than the last couple of years."

Ronaldo had an excellent Euro 2024 qualifying campaign with Portugal, scoring 10 goals in nine games. He is also the Selecao's and overall international top scorer of all-time with 130 goals in 208 games and 46 assists.

Roberto Martinez's side are second in Group F at Euro 2024 after Gameweek 1 and will take on leaders Turkiye on June 22.
