"If there is something there right now, do it" - Jamie Carragher urges Liverpool to sign Manchester City target in January
Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to sign Manchester City target Martin Zubimendi. The Reds legend believes the Real Sociedad midfielder can help the Merseyside giants stay at the top of the Premier League table.
Speaking on The Overlap's Stick to Football, Carragher claimed the midfield is the area Liverpool need to strengthen. He believes Zubimendi is the ideal candidate and called on his former side to sign him.
"If I was Liverpool I would be doing that (strengthening in January). I was thinking about this - if you are Arne Slot and let's say an average Premier League manager is at a top club for two or three years trying to win the league. Arteta has been there for four or five years. You are trying to build something. He might never be in this position again in terms of being nine points clear of Arsenal and five clear of City," he said via Liverpool Echo.
"There's a long way to go, I get that, but we know Liverpool don't do silly things in the transfer market but if there is something there right now. Do it. Zubimendi is the player he wanted, they ended up putting Gravenberch there who has been fantastic, but if he is the player you want - go and do it - you might never be in this position. You might be here three years but City are City and they are five points ahead of you at Christmas. Just make it count," Carragher added.
Liverpool were interested in signing Zubimendi in the summer and were ready to activate his release clause. However, the Spaniard decided to stay with his current club and not move to the Premier League.
Martin Zubimendi comments on his future amid Liverpool and Manchester City's interest
Manchester City have entered the race to sign Martin Zubimendi in January. The Cityzens are looking for a replacement for Rodri after the Ballon d'Or winner suffered an ACL injury.
Zubimendi is aware of the rumors but said he is not thinking about it. He told the media (via Yahoo Sports) on Thursday, November 14:
"There will always be rumours and there is again now that the month of January is approaching, but I don't waste energy on the noise outside. I'm happy with how I'm handling it and I'm going to take it."
Arsenal are also said to be interested in Zubimendi, while Barcelona were linked with him in the summer.
