“In the first half, we left them alive” - Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag laments draw at Crystal Palace
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag rued his side's missed chances in the first half of their fixture against Crystal Palace on Saturday, which ultimately ended 0-0.
The Red Devils started the game on a sprightly note, creating chance after chance and forcing multiple brilliant saves from Palace shotstopper Dean Henderson. Winger Alejandro Garnacho and captain Bruno Fernandes hit the woodwork in a singular passage of play in the 27th minute.
Despite the dominance, United failed to get on the scoresheet. Speaking about his side's inability to capitalize on the good momentum created in the first half, Ten Hag said (via Fabrizio Romano on X):
"We should have won. In the first half, we left them alive. We should have scored one or two goals. The second half was more balanced. We have worked very hard as a team to be defensively compact. Also, on the ball we want very good structures and control."
Manchester United remained on the offensive in the second half, with Ivorian youngster Amad Diallo and Fernandes sending a few shots just inches wide of the post.
United academy graduate Henderson came back to haunt his former side, turning in an outstanding performance. He made seven saves and three high claims and prevented 1.65 xG (via Statman Dave on X).
Ten Hag will be hoping to put the result behind him as the Red Devils prepare to kick off their Europa League campaign at Old Trafford against FC Twente on Wednesday (Sept. 25).
"We all see now how good he is" - Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag praises under-fire star's performance vs Crystal Palace
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag reserved special praise for under-fire superstar Andre Onana after his scintillating display against Crystal Palace.
Speaking to reporters after the game, he said (via United In Focus):
"Unbelievable save, Andre is so explosive. He's such a great stopper. It’s twice in one action. We all see now how good he is. His reactions are so good, he's so quick, and we saw that with the save in the second half."
Despite constant criticism, Onana has been impressive for Manchester United over the past few weeks. He made a double save and was on his toes to keep Palace from opening the goalscoring.
