Injured Real Madrid star could make surprise return against Atletico Madrid - Reports
Eduardo Camavinga could return to action for Real Madrid in their game against Atletico Madrid later this month, according to a report from Relevo. The French midfielder is yet to kick a ball this season after picking up an injury in training just before the UEFA Super Cup tie against Atalanta.
Camavinga reportedly collided with Aurelien Tchouameni and suffered a ligament sprain on his left knee. It was a big blow to Los Blancos, with Toni Kroos' retirement already opening up a void in the middle of the park.
The 21-year-old was expected to be key to the La Liga giants' plans for the season following an impressive 2023/24 campaign. Camavinga registered four assists from 46 games across competitions last season, even covering at left-back when required.
32 of those were from the start, signifying his growing importance to Carlo Ancelotti's plans. The Frenchman helped Real Madrid win the league, the Champions League, and the Spanish Supercup.
His absence has already been felt this season, with Real Madrid registering a difficult start to their campaign. Los Blancos won the UEFA Super Cup, with Camavinga on the bench, but are yet to fire on all cylinders in the league.
Barcelona's flawless run in La Liga has compounded their woes, with the Catalans winning all of their five games so far. Real Madrid, meanwhile, have two draws and three wins in as many games.
However, Camavinga's return could be a huge boost for Carlo Ancelotti. The Frenchman is apparently working on his recovery and is expected to regain full fitness ahead of schedule.
The coaching staff at the Santiago Bernabeu expects the player to resume training with the group next week. However, the game against Deportivo Alaves next Tuesday, September 24, could be too soon for him to feature.
Instead, Eduardo Camavinga could become available for selection when Los Blancos travel to the Civitas Metropolitan Stadium on Sunday, September 29, to face Atletico Madrid.
Could Eduardo Camavinga's return rejuvenate Real Madrid?
Real Madrid are still adjusting their tactics following Kylian Mbappe's addition to the team over the summer. It is fair to say that they have missed the power and presence of Camavinga in the middle of the park.
With Dani Ceballos also out with a knock, the Frenchman's return could be significant for Los Blancos. However, the club will be wary of rushing him back and are likely to ease him into action instead.
Next month's Champions League tie against Lille could be a more realistic date for his return.
