Inter Miami boss Tata Martino provides Lionel Messi fitness update ahead of Charlotte FC clash

Inter Miami manager Tata Martino has hinted that Lionel Messi is close to returning to his best shape ahead of the MLS playoffs. The Argentinean superstar returned to action for the Florida-based side earlier this month after recovering from a ligament injury.

The 37-year-old arrived at the Chase Stadium in the summer of 2023, following the expiry of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Later that year, Lionel Messi picked up his eighth Ballon d'Or, becoming the first active MLS player to win the coveted award.

The Argentinean helped Inter Miami win the Leagues Cup last year, the first silverware in the club's history. The MLS side have taken their game to a higher level this season and are leading the Eastern Conference table with four games left to play in the league.

The Herons are eight points clear of second-placed Cincinnati and could clinch the Supporter's Shield against Charlotte FC on Saturday, September 28. Lionel Messi is expected to start the game, which could spell trouble for the North Carolina club.

The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has scored two goals and set up one more from three games since returning to full fitness. With the business end of the season coming up, the Argentinean is expected to step up his game in search of gold.

Speaking to the press, as cited by Bola Vip, Martino remained confident that Messi will completely regain his fitness ahead of the playoffs.

"We are confident that (Messi) will arrive in very good shape for the playoffs,” said Martino.

The Argentinean has registered 16 goals and 12 assists from 18 games across competitions for the MLS side this season.

Inter Miami have been in inspired form in the MLS this season. They have won 19 of their 30 games in the league, drawing seven and losing just four. They have scored 68 goals so far, the most in the entire league, and arrive for the playoffs in sizzling form.

The Herons strengthened their squad by roping in Luis Suarez last December and also boast former Barcelona stars Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba in their ranks. However, the key piece of the puzzle is, as always, Lionel Messi.

The Argentinean is coming off another triumphant international tournament with La Albiceleste, having won the 2024 Copa America over the summer. With an arsenal of skills at his disposal and the experience of winning trophies throughout his career, he is now ready to create history in the MLS.
