“It was amazing” - Jose Mourinho opens up on his relationship with former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson

Fenerbahce SK boss Jose Mourinho has shed light on his relationship with former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. After a historic 26 years at the club, Ferguson retired at the end of the 2012-13 season.

Since 2013, he had been the ambassador for United until INEOS relieved him of his duties earlier this month.

Mourinho, who had a solid battle with Ferguson during his days as Chelsea boss and later took the United hot seat, recently spoke on his relations with the Scotsman himself. As per Daily Mail journalist Chris Wheeler, Mourinho said:

"My relationship with Sir Alex was amazing. The ambassadorial role, I really don't know the situation but it doesn't matter. He has the love and respect of every MU fan in the world and that is more important than a role or a few pounds he can make."

Sir Alex Ferguson, who has a stand named after him at Old Trafford, won 38 trophies during his 26-year tenure at Manchester United. Though the initial days were tough, slowly under his tutelage, United became a side to be reckoned with.

His trophy cabinet boasts 13 Premier League titles, two UEFA Champions League trophies, five FA Cups, four League Cups and one FIFA Club World Cup.

A look at Jose Mourinho's time at Manchester United

Following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement, Manchester United saw numerous changes at the helm. First, it was David Moyes, who was followed by Louis Van Gaal. In July 2016, the Red Devils roped in Jose Mourinho as their new boss.

Mourinho was in charge for 144 games till December 2018 and was succeeded by former United forward Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Out of these 144 fixtures, 84 ended in United's favor, 31 games ended in a draw and the manager lost on only 29 occasions.

Moreover, he won three trophies at Old Trafford - namely the UEFA Europa League, the English Super Cup and the English League Cup, all in the 2016-17 season.

Courtesy of the UEFA Europa League win, Mourinho took Manchester United back to the UEFA Champions League, a competition they failed to take part in the 2016-17 season.

Be it FC Porto, Chelsea, Real Madrid or even Tottenham Hotspur, Jose Mourinho has an impressive record against United. In 24 games against the Red Devils, he emerged victorious 10 times and played out a draw on nine occasions while losing five games.

His best win notably, came back in 2020 when his Spurs side defeated United 6-1 at Old Trafford.
