"It depends on what will happen in the future" - Ex-Portugal star responds when asked if Cristiano Ronaldo can score 1000 career goals

Former Portugal midfielder Costinha recently spoke about Cristiano Ronaldo's next milestone - 1000 goals. He gave his insight into the achievements of his former teammate, who recently hit the 900-goal mark.

Cristiano Ronaldo is currently on international duty with Portugal for their UEFA Nations League matches against Croatia and Scotland. Recently, he scored his 900th professional goal in a 2-1 win over Croatia.

In an interview with ESPN Brasil, his former teammate Costinha spoke about the 5-time Ballon d'Or winner's mentality and gave an insight into what could be next for the 39-year-old. Asked if Cristiano Ronaldo would go on to reach the 1000-goal mark, Costinha said:

"I think it depends a lot. It depends on what will happen in the future. If you're gonna want to keep playing. It depends a lot on many factors."

He added that he has no doubts Ronaldo will give it his all to achieve the goal.

"Now that he, if he has the opportunity, will try and be able to do it, that there I have no doubts whatsoever," Costinha said.

Costinha, who retired from football in 2010, made 53 appearances for Portugal and scored two goals for the team.

Speaking to reporters after reaching the 900-goal milestone, Cristiano Ronaldo spoke about the difficulties he has gone through.

“Only me and the people around me know how difficult it is to work daily to be physically and psychologically well and reach goal 900,” he said.

He admitted that his celebration was filled with emotion because it was a milestone he was eyeing for a long time.

"It's a unique milestone in my career and it was with a lot of emotion that I celebrated that goal. It represents a lot," Ronaldo admitted. "It was the number I wanted to achieve for a long time and I knew I would achieve it because, as I continue to play, it would happen naturally."

The Al-Nassr star also spoke about his legacy with the national team. He won his first trophy with Portugal by winning the 2016 Euros before lifting the 2019 UEFA Nations League.

He hinted that he has more to give to the national team by saying he has "more dreams".

"I already won two trophies for Portugal, something I really wanted. Whatever comes next is spectacular. I dreamed of this and I have more dreams," Ronaldo said.

The former Real Madrid superstar revealed via a video on his YouTube channel that he has his sights set on achieving the 1000-goal mark.
