"It was an emotional moment for me” - Raphinha claims Barcelona fans fulfilled his dream during Champions League clash
Barcelona star Raphinha has said that the fans chanting his name during their UEFA Champions League clash against Young Boys made him emotional. The Blaugrana beat the Swiss side 5-0 at the Olimpic Lluis Companys Stadium on Tuesday, October 1.
Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring in the eighth minute before Raphinha made it 2-0 in the 34th minute. Inigo Martinez added another three minutes later before Lewandowski completed his brace in the 51st minute. Mohamed Ali Camara then scored an own goal in the 81st minute.
During the game, Barcelona fans chanted Raphinha's name in support of his brilliant performance on the night. After the game, the Brazilian shared his thoughts on it, saying (via Fabrizio Romano):
“One of my dreams was to hear the fans chant my name... it happened and it was an emotional moment for me. I’m in the best moment of my career, I’m happy to help Barça in the best way possible.”
Raphinha started the game and also captained the side against Young Boys. He played the entire 90 minutes, scoring one goal and providing one assist. He completed 45/58 passes, created one big chance, completed 1/3 dribble attempts, and won 4/8 duels.
Raphinha on his incredible form for Barcelona this season
Raphinha has been one of, if not the best player for Barcelona under Hansi Flick this season. He has been a constant attacking threat, scoring six goals and providing four assists in 10 games across competitions.
The Brazilian arrived at Barca from Leeds United for a reported fee of €58 million in 2022. He mostly played as a right winger for the club. However, after his injury last season, Lamine Yamal made that position his own. Hence, Raphinha has played as a left winger or just behind the striker at times.
Speaking about his upturn in form and his position change, he said after the game against Young Boys (via Barca Blaugranes):
“I think what has changed the most is my position on the field. That’s what has really changed for me. I’ve always had the desire to play well. You have to always run. The result doesn’t matter. The most important thing is to give everything for the team.
“It’s important to score so many goals because at the end of the eight games it will matter.”
Raphinha will likely next be in action when Barcelona face Deportivo Alaves away in La Liga on Sunday, October 6.
