“It hasn’t mattered” - MLS legend makes bold claim about Lionel Messi missing matches for Inter Miami due to 2024 Copa America
Football pundit Sacha Kljestan believes Inter Miami have looked better without Lionel Messi this season. The MLS legend claimed that the Eastern Conference side did not miss the Argentine while he was away on national duty with Argentina.
Writing on MLS's website, Kljestan praised Tata Martino's side for doing well in Messi's absence. He also backed them to win their first-ever Supporters' Shield, saying:
"No team enters the All-Star Game feeling better than Inter Miami, who lead the overall table with 53 points. The Herons have won six of their last seven, all without Lionel Messi. He was busy winning Copa America and then unfortunately injured his ankle in the final.
"But it hasn't mattered, as head coach Tata Martino has dealt with missing players all season and keeps this team ticking. Inter Miami will enter the final sprint as definite favorites to lift their first-ever Supporters' Shield."
Inter Miami have collected 53 points from 25 matches this season so far. After missing out on the playoffs last season, Lionel Messi's side are currently on top of the Eastern Conference and the overall tables.
Lionel Messi to miss MLS All-Star game due to injury
Lionel Messi suffered an ankle injury during the Copa America final and could be set for some time on the sidelines. Inter Miami have claimed that the injury is not serious and he should be back soon, but have not set a timeline for his recovery.
Meanwhile, they added that Luis Suarez will also miss the All-Star game but could be back for the Leagues Cup match. Their statement read:
"Leo Messi will miss the All-Star Game due to an ankle injury, while Luis Suarez, who recently returned from international duty after over 40 days away from the club, will miss the All-Star Game due to knee discomfort. Their availability for Saturday's League's Cup match will be assessed based on their daily recovery process."
Tata Martino was asked about Messi's fitness status at a recent press conference. He stated that the club were not looking to take any risk with him.
"The club's medical report came out and the new information is that. Regarding when he could come back, he will be evaluated week by week and we will see what his recovery is like, we won't be taking any type of risk," he said (via intermiami.news).
Inter Miami have done well despite missing Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in the last few matches. They have won six of their last seven matches without the Argentine.
