"It was a mistake made in one game" - When Manchester United star Casemiro admitted that the name on his shirt is wrong and shared details
Manchester United midfielder Casemiro revealed back in 2023 that his name had been spelt wrong on his jersey throughout his career. However, he preferred to keep it that way as he was a superstitious person.
The Brazilian has cemented himself as one of the most celebrated midfielders of the modern era. With the ability to control the centre of the pitch, Casemiro is arguably one of the best central midfielders of his generation.
According to him, however, his name had been misspelt throughout his career and the trend began with his first club Sao Paulo. During an interview with Football Focus, the 32-year-old Manchester United midfielder revealed he went along with the mistake as his career flourished because of the spelling error.
Here's what he said:
"So the thing is, my name is Carlos Henrique Casimiro, with an 'I' there. I remember that I played a game for Sao Paulo and the club got my name wrong. They wrote it with an 'E'. I played really well in that game and as I'm a superstitious person, I said to them: 'Just leave it like that, as things are going well!'
"So the name stuck, but my name is Carlos Henrique Casimiro. It was a mistake made in one game, the name stuck and I said, 'No need to change it, leave it as it is'."
Casemiro won five Champions League titles during his time at Real Madrid. He made the move to United in 2022 for a reported fee of £70 million. In 32 appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions in his first season, the Brazilian managed five goals and three assists.
However, he came under the microscope following United's abysmal performances last season. Erik ten Hag's men finished eighth in the Premier League, their worst-ever finish in the league. Furthermore, he has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League, with several clubs tailing his relationship with the Old Trafford club.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag addresses Casemiro's future at Old Trafford
The former Ajax manager addressed the tittle-tattle around the Brazilian's future at the club with the new season around the corner.
While speaking to The Guardian, the Manchester United manager stated that the midfielder would have to spend some time on the bench in the upcoming season. He, however, stated that Casemiro remains the leader of the squad.
"You have to make choices – what was needed for that particular game. But he is a very important player. He is a leader and he can make a difference for our team. No one can play every game. It's impossible. All the players who are here, if they want to play for us, want to play for the bench, and they have the quality, then I hope they keep contributing to our team. We have seen that Casimiro in his career is so successful."
Notably, the Brazilian scored in Manchester United's 3-2 win over Real Betis during their pre-season friendly in the USA.
