"It’s clear we have the problems" - Erik ten Hag confirms Manchester United issues amid Matthijs de Ligt rumors
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag opened up about their defensive struggles. While he refused to confirm links with Matthijs de Ligt, he asserted that they need work in that area of the pitch.
The Red Devils signed 18-year-old centre-back Leny Yoro from LOSC Lille for a reported fee of €62 million. However, he's picked up an injury and will be out for a few weeks. As per journalist David Ornstein, they are now set to sign Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich for €45 million plus €5 million add-ons.
When asked if he could comment on those links after Manchester United's Community Shield loss against Manchester City on August 10, Ten Hag said (via Metro):
"No, I can’t. When we have some news, we will announce it. Until that point, we will work with the squad that is available."
However, he did point out that they need work in defensive areas, saying:
"It’s clear we have the problems (in defense) and we have to work. The players have to work to be available and the staff have to work. Together it should be a good collaboration with the players who are available."
Raphael Varane left Manchester United as a free agent earlier this summer and joined Como. Meanwhile, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans haven't been at their best in recent seasons. United's issues are further accentuated by recurring injury issues with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
Manchester United start 2024-25 season with Community Shield loss against Manchester City
The Red Devils came into the FA Community Shield clash against Manchester City on August 10 on the back of a mixed bag of pre-season results. They won two and lost three of their five friendlies, including a 2-1 defeat against Arsenal, who they beat on penalties.
After an initial 25 minutes where City dominated, Manchester United grew into the game as both sides missed chances in the first half. Erik ten Hag's side took the lead in the 82nd minute through substitute Alejandro Garnacho. However, Manchester City substitute Bernardo Silva equalised seven minutes later.
In the penalty shootout, Silva saw his penalty being saved by Andre Onana. However, Ederson saved Jadon Sancho's penalty off the post and Jonny Evans put his shot over the crossbar. It ended in a 7-6 win for Manchester City.
Manchester United will next face Fulham at Old Trafford in their 2024-25 Premier League opener on Friday, August 16. Manchester City, meanwhile, will face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge two days later.
