"It’s going to be him" - Rio Ferdinand names the one player Ruben Amorim will ask Manchester United to 'break the bank' to sign
Rio Ferdinand believes Ruben Amorim will ask Manchester United to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP. He believes that the manager will get the Red Devils to "break the bank" for the forward as he is a key part of his tactics.
Speaking on his Rio Reacts podcast, Ferdinand claimed that Gyokeres will be Amorim's main target at Manchester United. He is not sure if Rasmus Hojlund would remain at the club if the Swede star is signed. He said (via Metro):
"Gyokeres has scored a hatload of goals, and Amorim has made a player out of him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he says 'there is one player I need to get out of there' [Sporting] and it’s going to be him. He’s is integral for him.
"What happens to Rasmus Hojlund if they break the bank for someone like him? 64 appearances, 53 goals, played in England before albeit in the Championship. Would they break the bank for him and what would that mean for Hojlund? It’s a big decision to make."
Talking about the appointment of Amorim as the new manager, Ferdinand claimed that it was a good move. He added that Manchester City would have gone for the Portuguese if Pep Guardiola was leaving:
"He was fairly sought after by some of the top clubs. I think if Pep had gone he would be someone Man City would have gone for. I’ve heard that on good authority."
Manchester United paid €11 million to appoint Ruben Amorim as their new manager. However, he will take charge on November 11 and not immediately.
Pundit believes Manchester United United should sign Viktor Gyokeres
Tim Sherwood was on Sky Sports earlier today (November 1) and has also backed Manchester United to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP. He believes that the forward will do better than Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, saying:
“He (Amorim) needs to then decide what do I need in January. Does he bring in Marcus Edwards with him? That boy is a superstar. Do we bring Gyokeres? He’s absolutely on fire at the moment. I would suggest 100 per cent that boy comes in because they’re [United] starved of centre-forwards.
"They’ve got Hojlund, they’ve got Zirkzee, who’s not a centre-forward anyway, but they’ve got to get him out before they can bring players in, and that’s the problem.”
Manchester United signed the two forwards in the last 15 months – paying over £100 million for the duo. They have not done well at the club and the talks of possible replacements have already begun.
