"It's very hard to see that happening" β Paul Scholes predicts where Manchester United could finish in Premier League standings under Ruben Amorim
Manchester United great Paul Scholes has claimed that the Old Trafford side could finish sixth in the Premier League table should they appoint Ruben Amorim as their new manager.
The Red Devils, who sacked Erik ten Hag following a sub-par start to their season, are believed to be close to luring Amorim away from Sporting CP. They could have the Portuguese coach in their dugout in their Premier League home match against Chelsea on November 3.
Speaking on The Overlap, Scholes provided his two cents on Manchester United's potential position in the Premier League standings at the end of the campaign. He said (h/t Daily Mail):
"At the very best, Manchester United could finish fourth in the league. It's very hard to see that happening at this point, you'd probably say sixth [is more realistic]."
The Red Devils, who have named Ruud van Nistelrooy as their interim boss, have won just four of their 14 matches across competitions this season. They are in 14th place in the Premier League table with 11 points from nine outings, scoring a mere eight goals so far.
Last season, the Red Devils qualified for the UEFA Europa League after recording a 2-1 win in the FA Cup final over Manchester City. They achieved an eighth-place finish in the league table with just 60 points.
Meanwhile, Amorim guided Sporting to Primeira Liga glory last season. The former Benfica player has opened the ongoing season on a great note, helping his current team win 13 of their 15 overall outings.
Manchester United great Paul Scholes names his preferred choice to succeed Erik ten Hag
Speaking on The Overlap, Paul Scholes asserted that the Red Devils should have appointed England boss and ex-Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel as their manager. He said (h/t Mirror):
"I think Thomas Tuchel was the right one to coach Manchester United, but obviously he's gone now with England. He's someone who can manage an elite football club and win big games. He's been there and done it."
Tuchel, 51, was named England's new manager on October 16.
Opining on Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim, Scholes added:
"I agree on Ruben Amorim β it [the hype] feels a bit like Erik ten Hag [when he joined Manchester United]. He's coming from the Portuguese league, which is a bit better than the Dutch league. What heβs done there has been good."
The Old Trafford side will next be in action in their EFL Cup last-16 contest against Leciester City in front of their own fans this Wednesday.
