"It's an overload” - Carlo Ancelotti provides update on Kylian Mbappe after injury during Real Madrid vs Atalanta
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti claimed that Kylian Mbappe's injury is muscle overload. The French superstar picked up a knock during Tuesday's (December 10) 3-2 win over Atalanta in the Champions League.
Mbappe enjoyed a superb start to the game, latching on to a Brahim Diaz ball and sending Los Blancos ahead in the 10th minute. However, the 25-year-old pulled up while trying to make a run and had to be replaced in the 35th minute by Rodrygo Goes.
Mbappe has been in fine form in recent games and has found the back of the next in two games in a row. His injury, as such, could be a huge setback for the LaLiga champions.
However, speaking after the game as cited by Madrid Xtra, Ancelotti suggested that the injury wasn't serious.
“Kylian Mbappé's injury does NOT look serious. It's an overload,” said Ancelotti.
Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior got on the scoresheet to help Real Madrid secure all three points on Tuesday. Los Blancos are now 18th in the Champions League table after six games, with three wins and three defeats.
Interestingly, Kylian Mbappe scored his 50th Champions League goal on Tuesday, becoming only the ninth player in history to reach the figure. The Frenchman at 25 years and 356 days is also the second-youngest player to reach the milestone behind Lionel Messi (24 years and 284 days).
How many goals has Kylian Mbappe scored for Real Madrid this season?
Kylian Mbappe joined Real Madrid this summer as a free agent following the expiry of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). The Frenchman arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu with a huge reputation but hasn't been in his element yet.
Mbappe has also come under criticism after recently missing two penalties for Los Blancos. It has been suggested that he is struggling in the centre-forward position, having played as a left-forward for most of his career.
However, the Frenchman has still managed 12 goals and two assists from 22 games across competitions for the LaLiga giants. As such, Real Madrid have every reason to be frustrated with his recent injury setback.
Los Blancos have struggled with injuries this season, with Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao ruled out for the rest of the campaign with ACL concerns. David Alaba has yet to recover from a similar injury picked up last month.
Real Madrid are second in LaLiga, four points behind Barcelona with a game in hand.
