“It’s time for Real Madrid’s streak to end” - Dortmund coach makes bold claim ahead of Champions League final
Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzic was in a bullish mood ahead of the UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid, to be played on Saturday (June 1). The tactician believes his side can defeat the Spanish giants in the final, and he has voiced his belief.
Real Madrid are going after a record-extending 15th Champions League crown and a fifth in the last 10 years. The Spanish giants have only ever lost three UEFA Champions League finals; in 1962, 1964, and 1981 to Benfica, Inter Milan, and Liverpool, respectively.
Carlo Ancelotti and his side are overwhelming favorites to win the game at Wembley, but Borussia Dortmund can prove to be party poopers. Terzic made this clear as he spoke to the media in the build-up to the game. He believes his side can claim a remarkable victory on Saturday.
“It’s time for Real Madrid’s streak, 8 games & 8 wins in finals, to end," Terzic said (via Madrid Xtra).
Los Blancos have won each of their last eight final appearances, with their most recent coming against Liverpool in Paris in 2022. They have a superior record against the German outfit in the competition, winning six of their 14 meetings, with only three wins going to the Germans.
Borussia Dortmund had a memorable win over the Spanish side in the 2012-13 season when a certain Robert Lewandowski scored four times in a 4-1 win. They went on to reach the final in that season before falling to fellow German side Bayern Munich.
The match at Wembley will be the last match for German football icons Marco Reus and Toni Kroos for their respective clubs. Both men will look to lead their respective teams to victory in the game and end their time with their teams on a positive note.
Real Madrid star keen to target Champions League history
Real Madrid captain Nacho Fernandez has revealed that he is targeting a piece of Champions League history when his side face Borussia Dortmund in the final. The Spaniard, alongside several others in the squad, will have a chance to win a sixth title, a record held by club legend Paco Gento.
In an interview with Real Madrid TV, Nacho said the achievement is on his mind, as he looks to end his time at the club on a high note. The 34-year-old has been at the club since 2011 and has vowed to do all he can to win the trophy.
"A number of my team-mates and I are just one step away from equalling Gento and we're really eager to please madridismo and ourselves. The decade we've lived through has been incredible, I'm fortunate to be the captain of this team," Fernandez said (via Tribal Football).
"I want to thank you for the support you've shown throughout the season. We're just one step away from lifting the most special trophy for this club and we're going to give our all on the pitch," he added.
