Jose Mourinho responds after being dubbed ‘The Crying One’ by Galatasaray as Fenerbahce suffer loss to rivals in derby
Following Fenerbahce's 3-1 loss to Galatasaray in the Istanbul derby, Jose Mourinho responded to being called 'The Crying One' by opposition fans. The Portuguese manager suffered his first domestic loss of the season and second competitive loss in all competitions to his side's bitter cross-town rivals.
The match was decided by two former Napoli players, Victor Osimhen and Dries Mertens, who combined to settle the game following Dominik Livakovic's own goal. The home loss sees Fener go five points behind their cross-town rivals with six games played.
Mourinho was asked after the match if he knew the name the opposition fans coined for him, but he was in no mood for jokes. He responded to the journalist via Sportbible:
"Are you serious or are you joking? Are you sure you're a journalist?"
Jose Mourinho will lead his side out to face Union St Gillioise at home on September 26 in the Europa League. They will hope to return to winning ways following their disappointing defeat.
Jose Mourinho believes Fenerbahce 'risked everything' in loss to Galatasaray
Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho believes his side 'risked everything' in their loss to cross-town rivals Galatasaray and believes his side's poor finishing cost them. The Portuguese manager's side had 10 shots on target and 10 corners but only scored one goal in the game.
Speaking in a TV interview after the game, Mourinho said via the Express:
“It will be seen as a stupid answer but they won because they scored more goals than us. We started the match fast, we dominated but it didn’t matter. After all, we risked everything after 3-1 but this situation doesn’t mean anything. It doesn't matter how many we missed. We only scored from the penalty spot. They won because they scored more goals."
The Fenerbahce boss concluded, saying:
"I cannot accept the blame for those who entered the game later. The opponent scored from two throw-ins, it is not their fault, it is our fault. I don’t think Galatasaray played much better or superior than us. However, they managed to convert the positions they had into goals. We couldn’t score.”
Jose Mourinho's defeat to Galatasaray is the first he has suffered in Turkish football and came after a run of three games that saw them score 10 unreplied goals in domestic football.
