Julian Nagelsmann confirms thigh problem for Germany star after booking Euro 2024 R16 berth

Julian Nagelsmann has confirmed that Antonio Rudiger has a thigh problem, which could be problematic moving forward in the competition. Die Mannschaft sealed a Round of 16 spot as toppers of Group A after their 1-1 draw against Switzerland on Sunday, June 23.

The hosts went behind through Dan Ndoye's 28th-minute goal. Nicklas Fullkrug, however, equalized in the injury time of the second half (90+3'). Nagelsmann's side ended the group stages with seven points. They beat Scotland and Hungary and drew against Switzerland.

Although Rudiger played the full game against the Swiss, Nagelsmann confirmed that the Real Madrid defender has suffered a thigh issue. He said (via Bayern & Germany on X):

"Toni has a bit of a problem with his thigh. We'll have to see what happens. I hope it's nothing serious. We'll see. That could be qute problematic."

Antonio Rudiger, 31, is one of Germany's most experienced defenders. He has so far won 71 caps for the national team. Rudiger has played the entirety of all three games at Euro 2024 so far.

Nagelsmann has Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck as an excellent backup option in case Rudiger isn't fit. The Los Blancos superstar, though, is much more experienced, especially in big matches.
