Lamine Yamal, Jamal Musiala and more: Euro 2024 Team of the Tournament
The 2024 European Championships concluded in incredible fashion with the final at Berlin's Olympiastadion on July 14. Luis de la Fuente's Spain beat Gareth Southgate's England 2-1 to win their first EURO title since their back-to-back triumphs in 2008 and 2012.
The tournament was filled with upsets, fairytales and end-to-end footballing action, enthralling fans for an entire month. There were some incredible individual performances on display from established stars and emerging talents alike, inspiring their teams to success.
Here is Sportskeeda's team of the tournament for EURO 2024:
Goalkeeper - Giorgi Mamardashvili (Georgia)
23-year-old Mamardashvili played a crucial role in helping Georgia qualify for EURO 2024, their first-ever major tournament. He didn't disappoint at the finals either, making a staggering 29 saves in just four games, nine more than Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen in second place.
His only clean sheet of the tournament was a crucial one. It helped his side overcome Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal 2-0 in their final group-stage match and qualify for the knockouts.
Right-back - Dani Carvajal
Despite getting a red card in Spain's quarter-final matchup against Germany, Carvajal was one of the outstanding performers in his side's victorious run. He scored the third goal in their 3-0 demolition of Croatia in the first game of the group stage.
He helped his side keep two clean sheets, and his side conceded just three goals in five games when he was on the pitch.
Centre-back - Aymeric Laporte
Laporte missed Spain's opener against Croatia due to a muscular problem, but played every other game at EURO 2024. He was immense at the back for La Roja, stifling opposition attackers and helping to start attacks with his ball-playing ability.
He helped his side keep two clean sheets in the six games he played.
Centre-back - William Saliba
Despite their misfiring offense, France managed to reach the semi-final at EURO 2024 largely due to their defensive solidity. Arsenal man Saliba was arguably Les Bleus' best defender, keeping the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski and Romelu Lukaku at bay.
The 23-year-old commandeered his side to four clean sheets in six games.
Left-back - Marc Cucurella
Pre-tournament, many pundits and fans pointed Cucurella as a weak link in Spain's squad, but the 25-year-old proved them wrong in style. With his incredible work rate, tenacity, pace and determination, he did a bit of everything for his side on the left flank.
He played in six games at EURO 2024, fittingly concluding his tournament with an assist for Mikel Oyarzabal's winner (86') in the final against England.
Defensive midfield - Rodri
Widely considered one of the best defensive midfielders, Rodri's world-class quality was on full display for Spain throughout the tournament. He made six appearances at the competition, scoring in his side's 4-1 win over Georgia in the Round of 16.
For his masterful displays in the centre of the park, Rodri was named the Player of the Tournament.
Central midfield - Fabian Ruiz
One of the key men in Spain's run to the title, Fabian Ruiz was one of the best offensive midfielders in the competition. He was always at the right place at the right time, and tormented opposition players with his adept dribbling and technical trickery.
He ended the tournament with two goals and two assists in six games.
Central midfield - Dani Olmo
Alongside Fabian Ruiz, Olmo was the creative hub in Spain's transition from defense to attack. He delivered some clutch moments for his side, scoring in the Round of 16, quarter-final and semi-final against Georgia, Germany and France, respectively.
He also assisted Mikel Merino's winner against Germany in the 119th minute of the quarter-final, ending his tournament with three goals and two assists in six games.
Winger - Lamine Yamal
The top assister of the tournament (four in seven games), Yamal arguably announced himself as a generational talent on the biggest stage for Spain. He turned 17 just a day before the final (July 13), but showcased composure and footballing ability way beyond his years.
The exclamation point in Yamal's unbelievable EURO campaign was a stunning long-range curler into the top corner against France in the semi-final. For his exploits, he won the Young Player of the Tournament award.
Centre-forward - Cody Gakpo
Gakpo ended up as the joint top-scorer at EURO 2024 (three goals) alongside five other players. He was the main man up top for the Netherlands, delivering goals in crucial moments to inspire his side to the semi-final.
Gakpo finished with three goals and an assist in his six games.
Winger - Jamal Musiala
Arguably one of Germany's finest young prospects ever, Musiala's brilliance was in full view in his side's run to the quarter-final. He netted thrice in five games, and finished atop the Golden Boot race alongside five others.
Still only 21 years old, Musiala likely has a long international career ahead with the hopes of the German national team resting on his shoulders.
