"Let's get this cup again" - Fans react as Inter Miami start Leagues Cup defense with 2-0 win in Lionel Messi's absence
Fans have reacted on social media as Inter Miami started their Leagues Cup defense with a 2-0 win in Lionel Messi's absence. The legendary playmaker was notably a huge part of their journey to win the trophy last season. However, he was out of contention due to an injury and was unable to participate in their win against Puebla on Saturday (July 27).
Messi got injured during international duty with Argentina, picking up a serious knock in the final of Copa America 2024. In the second half, he was forced off the pitch and pictures of his swollen ankle went viral, raising uncertainties about his availability for the Herons.
The 37-year-old has since finished international duty with Argentina and has returned to Inter Miami. However, he was ruled out of their clash against Puebla. This didn't matter too much as Inter Miami put in an impressive performance, beating Puebla 2-0 thanks to goals from Luis Suarez and Matias Rojas.
Here is how fans on X reacted to their win without the Argentine legend:
"Defense very solid but attack needs to be worked on, I still would prefer campana over Suarez," a fan had concerns.
"They did it. We are dreamers ๐", another was pleased.
"VAMOS MIAMIIIII" an excited fan exclaimed.
"We coming for League Cup No2 ๐ฅ๐ฅ" a fan promised.
"Inter Miami march on," another said.

Luis Suarez charges Inter Miami amid Lionel Messi absence
Lionel Messi hasn't played for Inter Miami since mid-June, missing a total of eight games. However, the team has impressed, marking their seventh win in those eight with the 2-0 win over Puebla.
His teammate Luis Suarez has now explained what the Herons need to do without Messi. With the Argentine playmaker still nursing his injury, it is uncertain when he will return to the pitch and continue his remarkable form.
Speaking to reporters after their most recent game, Suarez said (via GOAL):
โInter have already won this, they have the experience. This is a matter of fighting until the end. Some like this, some may not, but we need to get used to it. Our obligation is to work.โ
Miami's next MLS game against Cincinnati is on August 24, as much of the coming month will be focused on the Leagues Cup. The Herons are hoping that Lionel Messi will be back by then, although there is no confirmed return date yet.
