Former Barcelona stars Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suarez are also on the club's protected list.
Messi joined the Herons in the summer of 2023 after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) expired. He has been a raring success for the Miami-based franchise since his arrival and is now the club's record goalscorer with 34 goals in 39 appearances.
Since Messi's arrival, Inter Miami have won their first two pieces of silverware, the 2023 Leagues Cup and 2024 Supporters Shield. He was in scintillating form last season, bagging 23 goals and 13 assists in 25 games.
Lionel Messi's contract with Inter Miami has one year left. The team will be keen to keep him beyond December 31, 2025, when his deal expires.
"It seems like he's going to stay with Inter Miami to keep playing and enjoying himself" - Argentine star expects Lionel Messi to remain in MLS until 2026 World Cup
Lionel Messi's Argentina teammate Alexis Mac Allister expects him to remain with Inter Miami until the 2026 World Cup. Mac Allister and Messi were instrumental in La Albiceleste's successful runs at the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa America.
Speaking about the legendary forward's plans, Mac Allister said (via GOAL):
“I hope so. I think so. There's a year-and-a-half left to go until the World Cup, and that's nothing. He looks happy, and although I don't know what will happen with his future, it seems like he's going to stay with Inter Miami to keep playing and enjoying himself. I hope he can make it because he's the player who makes the difference. It's always a plus to have him with us.”
Lionel Messi's contract with Inter Miami is set to expire six months before the 2026 World Cup. The legendary forward will be keen to secure regular football at club level to maintain fitness ahead of what will be his final World Cup.
