Lionel Messi sends emotional message to Argentina fans ahead of 2024 Copa America final
Lionel Messi penned down an emotional message on Instagram ahead of Argentina's 2024 Copa America final against Colombia. The two sides will face off at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida on Sunday, July 14.
La Albiceleste haven't been at their best but have reached the final as they look to defend their trophy. They beat Canada, Chile, and Peru in the group stages. They then narrowly got past Ecuador on penalties in the quarter-finals despite Lionel Messi missing his penalty. They then beat Canada again in the semi-finals.
Ahead of the summit clash, Messi posted a couple of pictures in an Instagram post from Argentina's training with the caption:
"Last day of Copa America. Once again we reached the end... This incredible road would have been impossible without the hard work of everyone, the ones who watch the most and the ones who are always behind the camera.
"Thanks to all for the effort and passion, to all the teammates and the technical body, to the workers of the National Team and all the Argentinians who came to encourage us to America and to those who could not come but support us from our country and also from other places where they are living."
Lionel Messi hasn't been at his best at the 2024 Copa America either, scoring one goal and providing one assist.
Lionel Messi's Argentina set for a tough challenge against Colombia in 2024 Copa America final
While Lionel Messi and Argentina haven't been at their best at 2024 Copa America, Colombia have surprised everyone with their stellar performances. Led by James Rodriguez, they have won four of their five games this tournament, with one draw.
Los Cafeteros began their campaign with a 2-1 win over Paraguay before comprehensively beating Costa Rica 3-0. They then drew 1-1 against Brazil to top Group D before hammering Panama 5-0 in their quarter-final clash.
They then faced Uruguay in the semi-final and took the lead in the 39th minute through Jefferson Lerma. Daniel Munoz was sent off in the first minute of first-half stoppage time. However, 10-men Colombia held on to their lead and made their way into the final.
Captain James Rodriguez has been their main man with six assists, the most in a single edition of the Copa America. He's also scored one goal in his five appearances.
Lionel Messi and Argentina will certainly have to battle hard to retain their title.
