Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai set to break 64-year-old record at Euro 2024
Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai could potentially break a 64-year-old record at Euro 2024 when he leads Hungary through the competition. The Magyarok are set to face Germany, Scotland, and Switzerland in Group A, and they will look to pick up two wins and enter the knockout stages.
Szobozlai became the captain of the Hungary national team in November 2022, while he was still playing for RB Leipzig after a switch from Red Bull Salzburg. When he potentially leads the team into their first match against Switzerland, he will be the youngest-ever captain in the history of the EUROs.
Reacting to it, the 23-year-old said during a press conference ahead of the tournament (via Sport Bible):
“A few days ago, I found out that I’ll be the youngest team captain of all time at the European Championship; this is a great honour for me and at the same time, I would like to thank Marco Rossi for trusting me and for giving me the opportunity to lead the team to the European Championship."
During the first tournament in 1960, defender Ladislav Novak captained Czechoslovakia at the age of 28. If Szobozlai plays in Hungary's first game, he will do so at just 23 years, 7 months, and 21 days old.
Dominik Szoboszlai played 33 games for Liverpool last season, helping them win the Carabao Cup, and he will look to take his form into the EUROs.
Fabrizio Romano provides update on Liverpool's wonderkid target
Liverpool have retained their interest in French wonderkid Leny Yoro who has also been on the radar of other clubs. The 18-year-old played an impressive 32 Ligue 1 matches for Lille, effectively stamping his place in their starting lineup. Although the Reds would like to sign him, Yoro is said to be waiting for a move to Real Madrid.
However, according to Fabrizio Romano, it will not be an easy task. The transfer expert explained on YouTube (via Empire of the Kop):
“What I’m told is that Real Madrid keep considering Leny Yoro, the centre-back of Lille, as a generational talent. They consider Leny Yoro a top player, for present and future, with an incredible potential.
"They made contact with his agent already multiple times, but it’s also true that he’s under contract for just one more year. This is why Real Madrid don’t want to pay crazy money."
He added, saying that he will listen to other proposals if Madrid don't show any interest.
“Leny Yoro is waiting for Madrid – he’s giving total priority to Real Madrid. If Real Madrid won’t be able to make it happen, he will be ready to listen to other proposals.”
Liverpool will hope they can sway the 18-year-old to Merseyside and potentially snag a "generational talent" for themselves.
