Liverpool star not keen on staying at Anfield amid interest from European club - Reports

Liverpool's Sepp van den Berg has reportedly asked for an immediate departure from the Anfield club because of a lack of first-team game time. The 22-year-old defender returned to Anfield after an impressive loan spell at German club Mainz last season where he helped the side avoid relegation.

With him in the side, Mainz were unbeaten for eight back-to-back games and finished the season with 35 points and two spots above the relegation zone. The Dutch center-back was instrumental in their comeback and started a total of 31 league games during his loan spell.

Despite the all-round improvement, it will be extremely difficult for Van den Berg to secure his place in the Liverpool first-team. They already have the likes of veterans like Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate, Kostas Tsimikas, Andy Robertson, and others. Arne Slot already has a set defensive lineup for his side next season and it seems like game time will be elusive for Sepp van den Berg.

German outlet Kicker further confirms that the Dutch defender is bent on leaving the club due to a lack of game time. Despite the Reds setting a steep transfer fee of $20 million, many clubs are interested in signing the defender. PSV Eindhoven have already submitted a bid for the Sepp van den Berg while Wolfsburg are another interested party.

Liverpool will be starting a Premier League season without Jurgen Klopp for the first time in the last nine years. Their new manager, Arne Slot is reportedly looking to bolster the No. 6 position of the first team before the new season kicks off. Although no particular name has popped up, it is reported by The Mirror that the player will be signed from outside the Premier League.

Liverpool tried many permutations and combinations in their midfield last summer. They saw the arrival of players like Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo, and others.

However, a prominent number 6 is what they have been lacking. Slot will be looking to reinforce that position to finally get them to the top of the Premier League charts by the end of his first season.

Liverpool start their Premier League 2025 campaign with an away clash against Ipswich Town on August 17 at Portman Road.
