Liverpool step up transfer plans to sign 23-year-old Premier League star wanted by Arsenal: Reports
Liverpool are considering a move for Brighton & Hove Albion star Joao Pedro, according to Football Insider. However, the Merseysiders will have to face competition from Arsenal.
Brighton signed Pedro from Watford in 2023 for a reported £30 million fee and the Brazilian forward has been excellent for the Seagulls since his arrival. Last season, Pedro scored 20 goals in 40 appearances across all competitions.
He predominantly plays as a centre forward but has been adept in other attacking positions as well, a trait that coulld make him extremely useful for Liverpool in the title race.
The Merseysiders don't seem to have declined since Jurgen Klopp's departure last summer, with Arne Slot proving his worth at Anfield. The Reds are in pole position to win the Premier League and have dominated the Champions League campaign with a 100 percent win record so far.
Liverpool only made two signings in the summer, including Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federicho Chiesa. The club will certainly be keen on reinforcing their squad as Slot's men mount their title charge.
The Reds have identified Joao Pedro as a target and have shown an interest in his attacking versatility, given Diogo Jota's injury issues and Darwin Nunez's struggle in front of goals.
Brighton expect at least double the amount they paid for Pedro's services and the Merseysiders are reportedly willing to pay the £60 million.
The 23-year-old has attracted interest from other clubs in the Premier League as well.
"I’ve heard there’s some interest" - Former scout speaks on Liverpool's interest in Joao Pedro
Former scout Mick Brown has opened up about the Reds' interest in Joao Pedro, corroborating the aforementioned outlet's report. He has claimed that Brighton will expect a substantial fee for his signature.
Brown said:
"Brighton are going to demand a huge fee for him. I’ve heard there’s some interest from Liverpool, but how far along that interest is, I’m not sure."
He added, however, that a move in the upcoming January transfer window would be unlikely given the complications involved in such a deal.
"I’d be surprised if it happens in January, given the money it would cost and the sorts of deals which usually take place in the middle of the season," he added.
According to reports, Arsenal and Chelsea have shown an interest in the Brighton star as well. The Gunners are searching for Gabriel Jesus' replacement, while the Blues are trying to bolster their team and challenge Liverpool in the title race.
Pedro has been in impressive form for the Seagulls this season, scoring four goals and providing three assists in 11 Premier League appearances so far.
