“Man can’t even do the basics”, “Awful player” – Arsenal fans blast 28-year-old star for poor performance in 1-0 Nottingham Forest defeat
Arsenal fans slammed new signing Leandro Trossard on Twitter after the 28-year-old had a poor performance during the Gunners' 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest away on May 20. The loss ensured Manchester City were crowned Premier League champions for the fifth time in six seasons.
Arsenal signed Trossard from Brighton & Hove Albion in the winter transfer window for a reported fee of £20 million. He was signed to give the Gunners further squad depth for their title charge. The left winger has done well, mostly as a substitute, scoring once and providing eight assists in 21 appearances this season.
Despite dominating possession against Nottingham Forest (82 percent), Arsenal were unable to make use of the ball, only having three shots on target. Taiwo Awoniyi scored the only goal of the game in the 19th minute to give the hosts an important three points.
Leandro Trossard had a poor outing on the left wing. He was given a chance to impress following Gabriel Martintelli's season-ending ankle injury. None of his two shots were on target, he made no successful dribbles or accurate crosses, and had a pass accuracy of just 74 percent.
Arsenal fans were far from impressed, blasting the Belgian on Twitter. Their reactions can be viewed below:
The Gunners' defeat meant they conceded the title to Manchester City. The Cityzens have 85 points, four more than Arsenal, and also have two games in hand.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta gives his thoughts after conceding title to Manchester City
Mikel Arteta gave his thoughts on losing out on winning the Premier League title following his side's 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest. The Gunners were in the hunt for their first league title in 19 years, even leading the table for more than 200 days. However, they fell just short during the final stretch of the season.
The Gunners have lost three of their last five league games, while Manchester City have been relentless winning their last 12 league games in a row.
Arteta expressed his disappointment in losing out on the title. He said (via football.london):
"Really sad day. A lot of difficult emotions. We lost the game and we lost the championship after 10 and a half months fighting and nine and a half months fighting. We built a lot belief that we could go on and win it."
"First of all, congrats Man City. From my side apologise because we have generated that belief that we can do it and at the end the team couldn’t do it."
Arsenal's final game of the season will be a consolation game against Wolverhampton Wanderers at home on May 28. They will be looking to end the season on a high after this disappointment.
