Manchester City identify ex-Barcelona target as a potential replacement for Kyle Walker: Reports
Manchester City have identified a former Barcelona target, Omar El Hilali, as their preferred option to replace ageing captain Kyle Walker, as per TBR Football. The Cityzens are preparing for the future and are thus constantly looking for replacements for their older stars.
England international Walker is regarded as one of the world's best right-backs due to his incredible recovery pace and defensive ability, but he is in the twilight of his career. At 34 years old, the former Tottenham Hotspur man still performs at a decent level and is part of Lee Carsley's England squad for this month's international fixtures.
Manchester City are set to undergo a major change in their hierarchy, with Hugo Viana set to take over from director of football Txiki Begiristain in 2025. One of the final targets of the current director is Espanyol defender El Hilali, who was also wanted by their Catalan rivals Barcelona, as per the aforementioned report.
Morocco youth international El Hilali has proven himself in Spain's top flight with Espanyol. Still only 21, the youngster has appeared in all 12 of his side's games in LaLiga this season.
El Hilali reportedly turned down offers to join Barcelona twice as a teenager, due to his loyalty to Espanyol. The Spain-born defender is also wanted by Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion in England, with both sides keeping close tabs on him.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola will be interested in having El Hilali in his team because of his versatility. Like Josko Gvardiol and Nathan Ake on the left side, the 21-year-old can play as a centre-back and as a full-back, making him ideal for Guardiola's system.
Manchester City star lauds Barcelona over impressive season
Manchester City midfielder and 2024 Ballon d'Or winner Rodri has praised Barcelona for their performance since the start of the 2024-25 season. The Spain international has been on the opposite side of the Spanish giants on multiple occasions over the years, particularly in the colours of Villarreal and Atletico Madrid.
Rodri said in an interview that he was looking forward to watching the Catalan giants play this season under Hansi Flick. He also pointed out that their performances have been surprisingly good, and he is happy with the Spanish players of the club.
“We’re all surprised by Barça level this season. I’m happy to see many Spanish players shining there. It looks like a team that can do fantastic things next. You like to see Barça playing under Hansi Flick,” he said (via Fabrizio Romano).
The midfielder is recovering from a damaged ACL suffered in his side's 2-2 draw against Arsenal in September. He has played alongside several of La Blaugrana's stars in the national team, winning Euro 2024 together in the summer.
