Manchester United attacker admits he feels 'guilty' of subpar performances as he releases emotional statement after Euro 2024 elimination

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund released a statement on social media after failing to shine for Denmark at Euro 2024. The young striker featured for the Danes as they lost 2-0 to hosts Germany in the Round of 16 to crash out of the tournament.

Denmark were impressive as they reached the semifinals of Euro 2020, and they have since seen the emergence of several young players. One of those players is Hojlund, who is on the books of Manchester United, having signed with the club last summer.

Still only 21, Rasmus Hojlund was tasked with leading the line for his country in Germany but he couldn't perform up to expectations. The striker failed to score in any of his four appearances at Euro 2024 despite starting every game.

Following Denmark's elimination, the former Atalanta striker went on Instagram to share his thoughts. He wrote about his experience of playing in his first major tournament for his country and said that he felt guilty for how it turned out.

"To be honest, I didn't really know what to expect from my first Euros. Supporting Denmark during a tournament was always one of the highlights as a Dane. Playing for Denmark was indescribable."
"I was so eager and wanted so badly to make our country proud. I texted one of my friends that I felt a bit guilty. It's a weird sentimental mix because there's also pride.
"Obviously, we wanted to bring the cup home, but the thing that will always bring me pride, both as a footballer and a Dane: We are red, we are white. We stand together, side by side," he added.

Hojlund showed his inexperience in the Round of 16 encounter against Germany, missing several presentable openings during the game. The Manchester United man struggled to make his mark on the big stage for his country as they scored just twice at Euro 2024.

Manchester United commence talks with Euro 2024 star - Reports

Manchester United have begun negotiations with Dutch defender Matthijs De Ligt over a transfer this summer, as per football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The Red Devils are interested in signing the Bayern Munich star to strengthen their backline this window.

Netherlands international De Ligt, who is currently at Euro 2024 with his country, is expected to cost around £60 million, where he has failed to nail down a regular spot. Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag is familiar with the defender, having worked with him at Ajax.

Manchester United are keen to sign a new centre-back, having lost Raphael Varane this summer. They are also prepared to receive offers for Victor Lindelof, leading to a need for defensive reinforcements.

De Ligt has not green-lit a move to Old Trafford yet as he is focused on helping his country at the Euros.
