Manchester United dealt blow as key player suffers new injury setback
Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has suffered a fresh injury scare ahead of the EFL Cup fourth-round clash with Leicester City on Wednesday (October 30). The 29-year-old is yet to make his season debut.
Shaw - who appeared at Euro 2024 for England - injured his calf in his first pre-season training with the Red Devils. He has been out of action since then with a torn hamstring.
Following the 2-1 Premier League defeat to West Ham United at the weekend - manager Erik ten Hag - who has now been sacked - provided an update on Shaw (as per Manchester Evening News):
"The process is not going as we expected; that's the truth. The setback, if you want to call it like this, we want also to do it very careful. When he is now dropping again, we want to be very careful.
"We know his past, we have to do this right, because we want him to be available, because he will have a big impact on our performances and also on our levels. We can't have him playing for some games and then drop out again. So, we will do it very carefully."
As per MEN, Shaw is set to miss out on the midweek clash with the Foxes, a game where interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy will be in charge.
It's pertinent to note that Shaw hasn't appeared for United for more than 250 days but made three appearances at Euro 2024, where the Three Lions lost 2-1 to Spain in the Berlin final in July.
What happened when Manchester United last faced Leicester City?
Manchester United have had 100 clashes with Leicester City across competitions, as per the BBC, with the Red Devils winning 50 and losing 25. That includes 11 meetings in the EFL Cup, where Nistelrooy's side lead 7-4.
The two sides haven't been in the best of form, especially in the Premier League. While the Red Devils are languishing in 14th place after nine games, winning thrice, the Foxes are two points and a place behind United, winning twice.
United, though, have happy memories of their last meeting with Leicester. In a Premier League clash in February 2023, the Red Devils won 3-0 at home, thanks to a Marcus Rashford brace and a second-half strike from Jadon Sancho, who's now on loan at Chelsea.
