Manchester United defender Harry Maguire reacts after ex-Sheffield United star George Baldock found dead in swimming pool
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has mourned the death of former Sheffield United star George Baldock. The England-born Greece international was found dead in the swimming pool at his home in Glyfada, southern Athens, on Wednesday (October 9).
Baldock, who made 219 appearances for Sheffield United during his seven-year stint, was just 31 years of age at the time of his death. As per The Guardian, police tried cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Baldock but he could not be revived.
Former Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire, who came through Sheffield United's youth ranks, has reacted to Baldock's death. Maguire never played alongside the former Greece international for Sheffield United but played seven times against him for Leicester City and Manchester United.
Maguire posted a story on his Instagram account where he wrote:
"RIP 💔"
George Baldock joined Greek giants Panathinaikos in the summer after spending seven years at Bramall Lane. He made his debut for the Athens-based side in August and featured for them on four occasions.
The former Sheffield United star started in Panathinaikos' goalless draw against rivals Olympiacos on Sunday (October 6). However, he was not named in Greece's Nations League squad to face England on Thursday (October 10).
Baldock was born on March 9, 1993, at Buckingham in England but chose to represent Greece due to his Greek ancestry. He made his international debut in 2022 and earned 12 caps.
Having come through the youth ranks of Milton Keynes Dons, George Baldock spent the majority of his career at Sheffield United following several loan spells in lower leagues. He scored six goals and provided 16 assists in 219 appearances for the Blades.

Baldock spent seven years on the books of Sheffield United, helping them get promoted to the Premier League on two occasions. He left Bramall Lane this summer and had shared a goodbye message.
On agreeing to a move to Panathinaikos in May, Baldock said on the Blades’ X account, as quoted by The Sun:
“To all you Sheffield United fans, it’s a huge thank-you from me. You’ve been absolutely amazing. Your support has been so much more than I ever expected. Like I said, you’re the best around."
He added:
“Keep supporting the team and the staff and hopefully the club can get back to where we all want it to be. I leave here as a massive fan of the club. Good luck and thank you.”
