Manchester United eye move for former Real Madrid defender to bolster Ruben Amorim's squad: Reports
Manchester United are keen on signing former Real Madrid defender Theo Hernandez as their next left-back in the upcoming summer transfer window, as per Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports. New head coach Ruben Amorim has identified the left-back position as one that needs to be filled immediately although the incumbent Luke Shaw has only just returned from injury.
In Shaw and backup left-back Tyler Malacia's absence, former manager Erik ten Hag often played Diogo Dalot in that position. However, Amorim likes to play with a three-man backline, which means that the left-back position or left-central defender position needs to be strengthened immediately. Sky Sports have also reported that United are keen on roping in Alphonso Davies.
While getting Davies might be a tad challenging for the Red Devils, they are closely monitoring Hernandez. The former Real Madrid man, who has a running contract with AC Milan till 2026, is a top-class player who is known for his piercing runs in the final third as well as excellent man-marking skills inside his box. What's more, the Frenchman can also play as a centre-back if needed.
Hernandez has started in eight Serie A matches for Milan this season, and along with his defensive contributions, has also scored two goals. As is expected from a fullback, Hernandez has picked up two assists as well.
Hernandez made a total of 23 appearances for Real Madrid, although he has been far more prolific for Milan, winning 228 caps and scoring 31 goals.
Manchester United need defensive reinforcements
Manchester United, who are currently languishing 12th in the Premier League with 16 points to their name, desperately need defensive reinforcements in the left fullback position. Although Shaw made his return from injury by playing for 34 minutes in their 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town on Sunday, United know that they have to look beyond him.
The 29-year-old arrived at the club from Southampton in 2014 and has made a total of 276 appearances while scoring four goals. However, he is extremely injury-prone and cannot be relied upon to last the entirety of a grueling season. Manchester United will want to keep him on as a fallback option or sell him in order to generate funds for the purchase of Hernandez.
