“Manchester United is interested but it's my choice” - Sporting CP coach Ruben Amorim breaks silence on links to Red Devils’ hot seat

Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim has broken his silence on being linked with Manchester United for the position of first-team head coach. The Portuguese has been heavily linked to the Red Devils after former manager Erik ten Hag was sacked on October 28.

The Dutchman's sacking came after a 2-1 loss to West Ham United in a Premier League away fixture on October 27 that left Manchester United 14th in the league table. The Red Devils have won only four out of 13 games this season across competitions.

In the Premier League, United have 11 points after nine games, having won only thrice. Until a permanent coach is hired, Ruud van Nistelrooy will remain in charge on an interim basis.

As reported by Daily Mail journalist Chris Wheeler, Sporting coach Ruben Amorim has spoken up about being linked to the Man United hot seat. He said:

“Manchester United is interested but it's my choice. Until everything is decided, we won't be making any noise. I have nothing useful to say. I will take on whatever I want to do, as I have always done.”

Ruben Amorim joined Sporting CP from Braga in March 2020. In his first full season in charge, Amorim led Sporting CP to the Primeira Liga title for the first time in 19 years. Overall, he has won two Primeira Liga titles, two Portuguese League Cups, and one Portuguese Super Cup with Sporting CP.

Manchester United are reportedly ready to meet Amorim’s reported release clause of €10 million and is negotiating with Sporting about his starting date. He could reportedly take charge of the Premier League clash against Ipswich Town on November 24, following the international break.

According to talkSPORT, Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim could reportedly triple his wages if he joins the Red Devils as head coach. The Portuguese tactician is said to earn a reported £2.15 million annually at Sporting. He was in talks with West Ham United over the summer and allegedly demanded around £7 million in talks.

As per the report, Manchester City were also in contention to secure Amorim’s services as a potential replacement for Pep Guardiola. The Catalan coach’s contract with the Sky Blues ends in 2025 with no clear indication about his future.

However, Sporting has denied links to Manchester City. They also confirmed that Manchester United have agreed to pay Amorim’s release clause, as per Fabrizio Romano.
