Manchester United legend Paul Scholes names two areas Liverpool need to sign players this summer
Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes reckons that Liverpool need two signings to make them a Premier League title contender. He pointed out the need for a defensive midfielder and a centre-back.
The Reds finished third in the league title last season, nine points behind champions Manchester City and seven behind Arsenal. They were in the title race for a long time but fell off towards the end. Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff left at the end of the last season and they've replaced him with Arne Slot.
In a recent episode of Fan Debate on The Overlap, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes previewed the upcoming season with Jamie Carragher. He said that the Merseysiders need to make two signings to challenge City and Arsenal.
“I think Liverpool are alright. I don’t think Liverpool are far off," Scholes said (via Rousing The Kop). Okay, the manager is a bit different from Jurgen Klopp but they were up there for quite a bit of last season and they just fell away the last few games. I’d say a holding midfield player away from being a really good team and possibly a centre-back.”
Liverpool are the only Premier League team yet to make a signing this summer. They've been linked with a move for midfielder Martin Zubimendi, as per David Ornstein.
Pundit raises concern over contract situation of 3 Liverpool stars
Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson has shared his concern regarding the contract situation of Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold. The three superstars of the club will see their contracts expire next summer. There has, hence, been speculation about their future.
Thompson believes that if the club aren't going to offer them a new contract, they need to sell him to avoid letting them leave for free next year. He said:
"He [Mohamed Salah] seems invigorated now and it's all wonderful. But he's not signed a contract. Trent's not signed a contract. Virgil van Dijk's not signed a contract. These are three big players we can ill afford, with our finances, to allow to go for nothing at the end of the season."
"So big decisions have got to be made with Mo, with Trent, with Virgil. Because when you're budgeting in your finances for your club, you'll have these prices, a certain price. Now, if they're going for nothing at the end of next season, it's a massive [loss]. So I still think decisions with one or two of them, big decisions have still got to be made."
