Manchester United legend Roy Keane sends message to Marcus Rashford after 2 missed chances in Community Shield loss

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has said that Marcus Rashford needs to be more 'clinical' in front of goal. He said so after the Red Devils fell to a 7-6 shootout loss to Manchester City in the FA Community Shield on Saturday (August 10).

In a hard-fought clash at the Wembley in London, a goalless stalemate in regulation time seemed on the cards when Bruno Fernandes set up Alejandro Garnacho's 82nd-minute opener.

However, just when the Red Devils might have thought that they had done enough to take the win, City hit back through Bernardo Silva - set up by Oscar Bobb - seven minutes later.

Meanwhile, Rashford - coming off an eight-goal 2023-24 campaign - was guilty of spurning two presentable openings for the Red Devils. Keane said about that (as per ITV via United Focus):

“We have seen Rashford score some great goals. (But) he has got to become a scorer of those chances. Be clinical. You have got to hit the target and make the goalkeeper save it. You’ve got to hit the target.”

Following a career-best 30-goal 2022-23 campaign, the Manchester United striker endured a loss in form last season, managing only eight strikes and five assists in 43 outings across competitions.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola sounded pleased with starting the new season with a title. The legendary Spaniard, though, had no qualms to admit the quality of Manchester United.

City's first shot on target came as late as the 89th minute. They trailed 3-1 in the shootout before Ederson saved a penalty and scored one himself to ensure his team's win.

"I enjoyed the season against our rival in Manchester and to start the season with a title is good," Guardiola told ITV (as per BBC). "We are really pleased. We lost a lot of balls after transitions. They are one of the best teams in the world. They are so dangerous to control. But, in the end, we did it.
"It is nice to play this game because it means you won something in the previous season. "Now we see how the players come back. The target now is not to win the Premier League, it is 'OK next game try and win it'. This is what we have to do."

City open their quest for a record-extending fifth Premier League title at Chelsea on August 18, while Manchester United are in action two days earlier at home to Fulham.
