Manchester United and Liverpool suffer setback in race to sign Bundesliga star wanted by Real Madrid: Reports

Manchester United and Liverpool have suffered a major setback in the race to sign Bundesliga star Alphonso Davies, according to The Athletic (via Goal). The Bayern Munich defender, who was also keenly wanted by Real Madrid, seems to be on the verge of extending his contract with his current club.

It appears as if the talks between Bayern and Davies are heading towards a positive outcome. Having spent almost seven years in Bavaria, the Canadian is reportedly reluctant to leave. Earlier, Bayern had proposed a renewal deal worth approximately €13 million till 2029, but Davies rejected it.

However, things seem to have changed for the better now, and the 23-year-old appears convinced to extend his stay in Munich. This news will, however, sound the death knell to the hopes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Real Madrid. All three European clubs seemed intent on signing Davies next summer.

Manchester United and Liverpool are on the lookout for fresh options in the transfer market

Both Manchester United and Liverpool are in the transfer market, looking out for new options. While United have been sporting a three-man backline ever since new head coach Ruben Amorim took charge, Liverpool might be rocked by the departure of three major players next summer.

Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk are running out of their existing contracts in 2025, and this might leave Liverpool's roster bare. However, talks are ongoing with all three players, with the club hopeful that they will renew their deals and extend their stay.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, have been rocked by a spate of injuries this season. The likes of Dani Carvajal, David Alaba, Eder Militao and Ferland Mendy - the major stars of their backline - are ruled out with injuries at the moment. This might force Los Blancos to enter the transfer market as well.
