Manchester United match their worst-ever goal tally since relegation in 1973-74 after draw with Chelsea
Following their 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Sunday (November 3), Manchester United have matched their worst-ever goal tally since the 1973-74 season. That campaign is significant as it was the last time the Red Devils were relegated from the top flight of English football.
The 20-time English champions have been dreadful this season, conceding 12 goals and scoring 12 in the league. They currently sit in 13th place with 12 points after 10 games. Their poor run of form has led to the dismissal of Erik ten Hag and the appointment of Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim in a bid to steady the ship.
The Manchester-based club has to do better for a club of their size and standing or risk repeating history, with five points separating them from the relegation zone with nearly a third of the campaign played.
Former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistlerooy is in charge on an interim basis and will hope to get more points and goals on the board. New manager Ruben Amorim is expected to take charge on November 11.
The Red Devils next Premier League game sees them face Leicester City at Old Trafford on November 10.
Former Manchester United midfielder blasts team after draw with Chelsea
Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane blasted the team after their 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford. The 20-time English champions have won just three games in the league this season and look a shadow of the side that dominated the English game in the 90s and early 2000s.
Keane, a part of the triumphant United teams of yore, could not hide his disappointment with the team and how they played after the final whistle. The Irishman blasted the team on Sky Sports, saying:
"They are almost boring, they have a lack of conviction in their chances. They were so flat, the fans must be disappointed. They are way off in terms of getting back to that top four and competing. I think it is a bit of everything. As a team, you look at certain individuals and maybe we think they are better than they are. They’ve got established internationals. United are average at everything."
The seven-time Premier League winner concluded, saying:
"The lack of goals is still hard to believe. You look at the opportunities they are creating and missing - that is why managers lose their jobs. That’s why the goals record is what it is. It’s properly hit and miss, and more likely it is a miss. Manchester United fans must be going away today scratching their heads. It was very quiet today at Old Trafford."
The Red Devils will hope they can build on their result against Chelsea and return to winning ways in the matches to come. They currently sit in the bottom half of the Premier League table with the hectic festive round of fixtures fast approaching.
