Manchester United Transfer News Roundup: Erik ten Hag set to stay; Red Devils plan Youssouf Fofana move, and more - June 12, 2024
Manchester United are looking to usher in a new era under new minority owners INEOS. The Premier League giants finished the 2023-24 campaign in eighth place in the league and are expected to seek reinforcements over the summer.
Meanwhile, manager Erik ten Hag is set to continue his stay at Old Trafford. Elsewhere, the Red Devils are working to secure the services of Monaco midfielder Youssouf Fofana this year.
On that note, here's a look at the key Manchester United transfer stories as on June 12, 2024:
Erik ten Hag set to stay at Old Trafford, says David Ornstein
Manchester United have decided to continue with Erik ten Hag at the helm of first team affairs, according to acclaimed journalist David Ornstein. The Dutch manager endured a difficult 2023-24 campaign, although he ended the season on a high by winning the FA Cup.
New minority owners INEOS were engaged in lengthy end-of-season assessment regarding multiple matters at the club, including Ten Hag's future. They have decided that it would be in the best interests of the club if the Dutchman continues his reign.
The Red Devils are likely to consider a new deal for Ten Hag, whose contract expires in 2025. The Dutchman won the EFL Cup last season and is the only manager to have won trophies in consecutive seasons with Manchester United since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement.
Manchester United plan Youssouf Fofana move
Manchester are planning to move for Youssouf Fofana this summer, according to Le10Sport. A new midfielder is high up on Erik ten Hag's agenda this summer, with Casemiro expected to be on the move.
There are also doubts regarding the future of Christian Eriksen, who has struggled for game time at Old Trafford since the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo. With Sofyan Amrabat set to return to Fiorentina at the end of his loan tenure, the Red Devils have turned to Fofana.
The Frenchman enjoyed an impressive 2023-24 campaign with Monaco, registering four goals and as many assists in 35 games across competitions. His contract with the Ligue 1 club expires in 2025, but he hasn't signed a new deal yet.
Monaco will be forced to cash in on the 25-year-old if he doesn't extend his stay. That would suit Manchester United, but they face competition from Juventus and AC Milan for his signature.
Red Devils eyeing new striker, says journalist
Manchester United are planning to bring in an experienced striker this summer, according to journalist Dharmesh Sheth. The Red Devils signed Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta last summer, and the 21-year-old enjoyed a decent debut campaign in the Premier League.
The Danish striker scored 16 goals and set up two in 43 games across competitions. However, he's not a finished product yet, and the Premier League giants need a proven striker to help him flourish.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Sheth added Manchester United also wanted a new No. 9 last year apart from Hojlund.
“This was something that they were looking at last summer, even before and after Rasmus Hojlund came to the club.
"I don't think they wanted to go into the season with Hojlund being the guy that the responsibility was going to fall to with regard to goals. He was only 20 years old," said Sheth.
He continued:
“He'd come from a league where he hadn't played a huge amount of games, and had no Premier League experience either.
"So I think maybe a player who's got some more experience, slightly older than Hojlund, because I don't think they want to stunt his development. I think they just want to help Hojlund out more than what they did last summer.”
Recent reports have linked the Red Devils with Joselu, but it now appears that the player is close to signing a permanent deal with Real Madrid.
