Manchester United Transfer News Roundup: Red Devils eyeing Dani Olmo; club in talks with Mauricio Pochettino, and more - May 28, 2024
Manchester United are preparing for the upcoming season after an underwhelming campaign under Erik ten Hag. The Red Devils won the FA Cup but finished eight in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, the English giants are interested in RB Leipzig midfielder Dani Olmo. Elsewhere, the club have been in touch with former Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino regarding the hot seat at Old Trafford.
On that note, here's a look at the key Manchester United transfer stories as on May 28, 2024:
Manchester United eyeing Dani Olmo
Manchester United have set their sights on Dani Olmo, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The Spanish midfielder reportedly has a £51 million release clause, which expires in mid-July, which the Premier League giants are trying to exercise. Olmo has endured an injury-riddled season with RB Leipzig but still managed eight goals and five assists in 25 outings across competitions.
The Red Devils are looking to revamp their midfield this summer, with Christian Eriksen and Casemiro likely to leave. Mason Mount has failed to get going, while Scot McTominay is at best a squad option.
Olmo has the qualities to improve the Premier League giants, but his injury history could be a cause of concern for United. Meanwhile, there's likely to be a rush for the player's services, with Liverpool, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Barcelona also interested in the 26-year-old.
Red Devils in talks with Mauricio Pochettino
Manchester United have been in touch with Mauricio Pochettino regarding the Old Trafford job, according to TEAMTALK.
New minority owners INEOS are expected to make some tough decisions this summer following an underwhelming season. Despite winning the FA Cup last weekend, Ten Hag's job also remains under scrutiny.
Pochettino parted ways with Chelsea last week and is now available for his next assignment. The Argentinean is a long-term target for the Red Devils and has been linked with a move to Old Trafford before.
The club have apparently rekindled their interest in Pochettino as they consider a managerial change ahead of the new campaign.
Anthony Martial leaves Old Trafford
Anthony Martial has confirmed that he will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season.
The French striker has blown hot and cold since joining Manchester United from Monaco in 2015. Initially tipped for excellence, Martial struggled with fitness and form over the years and has been a peripheral figure under Ten Hag. The 28-year-old's contract expires next month, but the Premier League giants have opted not to extend his stay.
Sharing the news on social media, Martial thanked fans for their support over the years.
“Dear Manchester United fans. It’s with great emotion that I write to you today to say goodbye. After nine incredible years at the club, the time has come for me to turn a new page in my career. Since I arrived in 2015, I have had the immense honour of wearing this shirt and playing in front of you, the best supporters in the world!" wrote Martial.
He continued:
"You have been an unwavering support, through the good times and the difficult. Your passion and loyalty have been a constant source of motivation for me. I’d like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you’ve done for me. Your songs, your encouragement and your love for the club are memories that will remain engraved in my heart forever."
Martial also extended his gratitude to teammates and members of the staff.
“I would also like to express my gratitude to all my team-mates, technical staff and all the members of the club I have met during my 9 years here. I am proud to have been able to share these experiences with you," wrote Martial.
He concluded:
“Manchester United will always be in my heart. This club has left its mark on my career and offered me an incredible opportunity to play in front of you. I’m leaving to take on new challenges, I’ll always be a Red Devil and I’ll continue to follow the club’s results with passion. Thank you again for everything, and see you soon.”
Martial has registered 90 goals and 47 assists from 317 appearances across competitions during his nine-year stay with the Red Devils.
