Manchester United Transfer News Roundup: Red Devils eyeing Jamal Musiala; Brian Brobbey to cost €60-80 million, and more - April 22, 2024
Manchester United secured a hard-fought 4-2 win via penalties over Coventry City on Sunday, April 22, in the FA Cup semifinals. Erik ten Hag's men allowed a 3-0 lead to slip away, but eventually set up a Manchester Derby in the final.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils are interested in Bayern Munich attacker Jamal Musiala. Elsewhere, Brian Brobbery will cost a fat fee this summer.
On that note, here's a look at the key Manchester United transfer stories as on April 22, 2024:
Manchester United eyeing Jamal Musiala
Manchester United have set their sights on Jamal Musiala, according to Todo Fichajes.
The Germany international is one of the finest young talents in the continent and has admirers at clubs across Europe. Musiala has been in fine form this season as well, registering 12 goals and seven assists in 36 games across competitions. The 21-year-old's contract with Bayern Munich expires in 2026, but he hasn't signed an extension yet.
The Red Devils are keeping a close eye on his situation and want to prise him away this summer. The Premier League giants are hoping to usher in a new era under new minority owners INEOS, and Musiala could be a statement signing ahead of a vital season.
However, Manchester United face competition from Real Madrid, Manchester City as well as Paris Saint-Germain for the German attacking midfielder. Musiala is also expected to cost around €120 million, which could pose a problem for the Red Devils.
Brian Brobbey to cost €60-80 million, says journalist
Brian Brobbey will cost €60-80 million this summer, according to journalist Mike Verweij.
The Dutch forward has been in impressive form for Ajax this season, registering 21 goals and 10 assists in 39 outings across competitions. Manchester United have had their eyes on the 22-year-old for a while, as per reports, with Erik ten Hag keen to be reunited with his former player.
It was previously believed that the Eredivisie side will not consider a move for Brobbey. Speaking recently as cited by Caught Offside, Verweij said that only a monster offer will force Ajax to change their stance.
“Ajax have made it clear to him that they do not want to get rid of him, nor do they want to enter into talks with other clubs.
"If they offer sixty, seventy or eighty million euros, things could suddenly be very different again. But Ajax wants to build an eleven around him,” said Verweij
The Red Devils are expected to sign a new No. 9 this summer, and Brobbey could be their man.
Red Devils planning to sign new defender this summer, says Fabrizio Romano
Manchester United will reinforce their backline at the end of this season, according to acclaimed transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.
The Red Devils have struggled with injuries in defence this campaign. Meanwhile, Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire continue to be linked with an exit from Old Trafford this summer. A new defender is fast emerging as a priority for the club this year.
In his column for Caught Offside, Romano added that Manchester United are yet to decide their targets for the position.
“Staying with Man United, we know they have an injury crisis in defence, meaning Harry Maguire is their only fit centre-back option for today’s game against Coventry City in the FA Cup semifinal.
They’ve been very unlucky because they didn’t make a top centre-back signing last summer as they had five options in that position – Maguire, and also Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans,” wrote Romano.
He continued:
“Of course they will be signing a new centre-back this summer, as I’ve reported since September 2023, for sure that will be one of their priorities. But in terms of names, the top target will be decided later.
"The likes of Gleison Bremer, Jean-Clair Todibo, Jarrad Branthwaite and Antonio Silva have been scouted, and it could even be that they’ll make two signings in that position, but it’s too early now to know which specific players they’ll prioritise.”
Ten Hag would ideally want a top name to become a regular partner for Lisandro Martinez at the back.
