Manchester United Transfer News Roundup: Red Devils eyeing Sporting ace, Sergio Reguilon wants return, and more - July 25, 2024

Manchester United ended up in eighth place in the league table last season, their lowest finish in the Premier League era. However, Erik ten Hag managed to secure his job by defeating Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils have set their sights on a Sporting midfielder. Elsewhere, Sergio Reguilon is ready to return to Old Trafford this summer.

On that note, let's look at the major Manchester United transfer stories from July 25, 2024.

Manchester United have identified Morten Hjulmand as a possible alternative to Manuel Ugarte, according to Football Transfers. Erik ten Hag is looking to upgrade his midfield this summer amid the uncertainties surrounding Casemiro's future.

The veteran Brazilian was a shadow of his former self last season and the Dutch manager is eyeing an upgrade. Recent reports have suggested that Paris Saint-Germain's Ugarte has been identified as the ideal successor to the 32-year-old.

It has also been mentioned that the Red Devils have already agreed personal terms with the Uruguayan midfielder and are working to strike a deal with the Parisians. However, it now appears that the Ligue 1 champions want €70m for Ugarte, prompting the English giants to seek alternative targets.

Hjulmand has popped up on Ten Hag's radar as an option, following an impressive run with Sporting. The 25-year-old registered 49 appearances for the Portuguese club last season and could be a fine partner for Kobbie Mainoo in the middle of the park.

Sergio Reguilon wants return, says Fabrizio Romano

Sergio Reguilon is ready to return to Old Trafford this year, according to acclaimed journalist Fabrizio Romano. The Spanish left-back moved to Old Trafford on loan last summer, but the club opted to cut short his stay in January.

However, it proved to be a poor decision, with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia failing to regain fitness. The Red Devils remain in the market for a new left-back this summer to address the situation and are eyeing multiple options.

Reguilon is not part of Ange Postecoglou's plans at the moment and Tottenham Hotspur are ready to let him go this summer. The former Real Madrid man could be a cost effective option for Erik ten Hag for the position.

In his column for Caught Offside, however, Romano added that the two clubs are not in talks to discuss a deal.

“What is important to say is that at the moment, there is still nothing advanced or nothing concrete between Tottenham and Man United for Reguilon. So nothing is really advanced on this one," wrote Romano.

He continued:

“But in general, Sergio Reguilon was very happy at Manchester United. So if tomorrow, Man United decide to return for Sergio Reguilon, the player will be keen on the move. He loved his time at Manchester United, was a short time, but he was very happy with the club, with the tactical ideas and with all the points involved in Manchester United.”

Reguilon struggled with niggling injuries during his time at Old Trafford, registering just 12 appearances across competitions.

Red Devils not pushing to offload Scott McTominay, says Fabrizio Romano

Manchester United are not pushing to offload Scott McTominay this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Scottish midfielder has dropped down the pecking order at Old Trafford since Erik ten Hag's arrival.

With the Dutch manager already working to reinforce his midfield this summer, McTominay's future has been subject to speculation. Recent reports have suggested that Fulham have their eyes on the 27-year-old.

However, in his column for Caught Offside, Romano insisted that the Cottagers are yet to submit an offer for McTominay.

“Fulham have also been linked with Scott McTominay and reports of their interest is accurate, though nothing is close or advanced at this stage. For Manchester United it’s been a very clear position since last summer: in case of a good, important proposal McTominay can leave. Otherwise they would be more than happy to keep McTominay at the club,” wrote Romano.

With Casemiro expected to leave and Christian Eriksen's future also uncertain, Ten Hag wouldn't mind keeping hold of the Scot.
