Manchester United Transfer News Roundup: Red Devils in talks for Ligue 1 ace, Sofyan Amrabat wants to stay, and more - May 27, 2024
Manchester United are preparing for a vital summer transfer window following an underwhelming season. INEOS took charge of the footballing matters at Old Trafford earlier this year and are expected to make multiple changes to the squad before the new campaign.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils are in talks to sign Jean-Clair Todibo this summer. Elsewhere, Sofyan Amrabat wants to stay permanently at the club.
On that note, let's take a look at the major Manchester United transfer stories from May 27, 2024.
Manchester United in talks for Jean-Clair Todibo
Jean-Claire Todibo has admitted that he has had discussions regarding a move to Manchester United this summer. The Red Devils are on the hunt for defensive reinforcements, after deciding to let Raphael Varane leave this summer. Todibo has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for a while, with the rumours gathering speed since INEOS took over.
As cited by The Telegraph, the 24-year-old refused to open up further regarding a move, out of respect for Nice fans.
“Honestly, I don’t want to talk about it [his future] because of my respect for the fans here and the club also. But we had a little discussion, for sure,” said Todibo.
Todibo has appeared 33 times across competitions this season for the Ligue 1 club, who are also owned by INEOS.
Sofyan Amrabat wants to stay
Sofyan Amrabat has expressed a desire to stay at Manchester United beyond this summer. The Moroccan midfielder arrived at Old Trafford on loan from Fiorentina last summer and has endured a forgettable season at the club. However, Amrabat has finished the season on a strong note and was outstanding against Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
Amrabat's efforts have sparked talk of a permanent deal. The Red Devils reportedly have a £21m option to sign the player permanently this summer.
Speaking to Ziggo Sport, the 27-year-old said that he will have a talk with the club regarding his future.
“Do I already know what I’m going to do next year? No. We are going to talk. Staying is certainly an option. Look, I think it has been a very difficult season. For Manchester United it needs to be much better, and also for me personally. We are going to talk," Amrabat said.
He continued:
"Manchester United are the biggest club in the world, so who wouldn’t want to play football here? But all parties have to be happy with each other, so we will sit down now and see what happens.”
The Premier League giants are likely to look for a new midfielder this summer, with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen likely to leave.
Former Liverpool player advises Red Devils to sack Erik ten Hag
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has advised Manchester United to part ways with Erik ten Hag. The Dutch manager has been under intense pressure at Old Trafford following an underwhelming second season. However, Ten Hag defied all odds to win the FA Cup on Saturday and secured qualification for the Europa League next season. The fanbase remains divided on their manager's future, although the calls to keep hold of him are getting stronger by the minute.
However, in his column for The Daily Mail, Murphy insisted that the late heroics won't be enough to save the Dutchman.
"I'm pleased he has won a second trophy because he's had to put up with a hell of a lot at Old Trafford. At the same time, it is normal for a manager to take criticism at such a big club," wrote Murphy.
He continued:
"One swallow doesn't make a summer The reality is he has not shown enough in terms of motivational techniques or tactics over a period of time. He has failed repeatedly and I don't think this final will be enough to save him because the United owners cannot base their decision on one match."
Murphy went on to add that Manchester United need to plan for a managerial change this summer to get the club back to the top.
"My view is that after the season United have had, it was imperative for the club to look at viable options. I don’t think the hierarchy will feel guilty if Ten Hag is upset. He will be well compensated if he leaves and his job would not be under threat if the team had performed," Murphy wrote.
He concluded:
"United have to be competitive in big competitions. They have been nowhere near it for a year and the buck stops with the manager. I would be amazed if there isn’t a change, despite yesterday."
Acclaimed journalist Fabrizio Romano had stated that the Red Devils are set to initiate discussions this week to decide Ten Hag's future.
