Manchester United will be asked to pay £30 million to sign player from Championship club - Reports
Manchester United's pursuit of midfield reinforcements has been well-known, and they are linked to multiple top options across the continent. However, after talks with Manuel Ugarte cooled down, the Red Devils have altered the profile of choice and are reportedly looking elsewhere.
According to David Anderson of the Daily Mirror, the Greater Manchester club are zooming in on Burnley's Sander Berge, with the Clarets setting a £30 million price tag on the Norwegian international. The Lancashire-based outfit will not stand in the way of Berge's potential move to Old Trafford, but they are determined to secure full value for the player if he departs.
Berge, who joined Burnley from Sheffield United in the summer of 2023, quickly became a key figure in Vincent Kompany's side but ended up facing relegation. The 26-year-old started in 34 out of his 37 appearances last season and produced three-goal contributions across the season.
Why are Manchester United looking to sign Sander Berge?
Presumably, Sander Berge's versatility and physical presence in midfield caught the attention of Manchester United, who're looking for a stop-gap solution to their midfield troubles. While Casemiro at one point looked close to the exit door, the Brazilian could still be a Red Devil come September 1. Kobbie Mainoo is their blue-eyed boy and the club will expectedly do everything in their power to continue his meteoric rise.
However, beyond these two options, and Bruno Fernandes, who'll certainly start every match unless injured, irrespective of the position, there's plenty of uncertainty regarding the rest. Scott McTominay is expected to be departing the club soon, and Christian Eriksen, despite his heroics in the Euro 2024, has been underwhelming for the club in patches.
Meanwhile, Mason Mount hasn't lived up to his previous standards following the transfer to Manchester United. Hence, Berge's ability to fill a couple of gaping holes in the midfield could be why Erik ten Hag is pursuing his signature. However, with Burnley demanding a significant fee, United will have to weigh the cost against other alternatives.
