Marseille fans make feelings clear about Mason Greenwood signing as they launch new campaign after Manchester United outcast closes in on transfer
Fans of Ligue 1 outfit Olympique Marseille have protested the potential signing of Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood. The French club has been linked with the purchase of the Englishman this summer following his return from Getafe.
Fans of the club have stated their opposition to the club signing Greenwood following his off-field issues that led to his exile from the Red Devils. On OM Forum, a statement from fans read:
“At a time when negotiations for the arrival of Mason Greenwood are announced as becoming increasingly heated, it seems necessary to explain, once again and before the damage becomes irreversible, why this transfer seems inconceivable in view of the values displayed by the club and why it would mean for many of us a red line that would irreparably damage the passion that we have for this club.”
Mason Greenwood is reportedly deeply appreciated by new Marseille coach Roberto Di Zerbi and the club's board and it remains to be seen if he is signed. Manchester United will hope they can sanction the sale of the forward and rake in the reported €25 million fee touted for his services.
Why was Mason Greenwood recently at Manchester United's training ground?
Exiled Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood was recently pictured back at the club's training ground. However, he has not returned to the club to train after he was exiled nearly three years ago following his arrest on charges of assault and coercive behavior in January 2022.
The forward went out on loan last season to La Liga side Getafe and scored 10 goals in a generally impressive loan spell. His displays have seen him become a transfer target for Lazio and Marseille this transfer window which could see the Englishman end his exile at Old Trafford.
As per the Athletic, Greenwood came to the Carrington training ground to discuss his future with Manchester United as he looks to finally depart the club.
The Red Devils require reinforcements after enduring a disappointing campaign last season that saw them finish eighth in the Premier League. They need every pound they can get in sales if they hope to recruit the players needed for Erik ten Hag's third season.
