Mesut Ozil sends message to Arsenal and Manchester United linked Viktor Gyokeres after striker scores in 4-1 win over Manchester City
Former Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has sent a message to Manchester United linked Viktor Gyokeres after Sporting's 4-1 win against Manchester City. The Leoes saw their star striker bag a hat-trick in this UEFA Champions League fixture on Tuesday (November 5).
The Sweden international converted two spot kicks in the second half while managing to find the net once in the first. Ozil was seemingly impressed with the forward's first strike, which saw Gyokeres chip the opposition goalkeeper from a tight angle.
The former Germany international was also popular for his ability to chip shot-stoppers from narrow angles. Following the conclusion of the aforementioned match, Ozil wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
"COngrats Viktor Gyokeres. Nice chip shot!"
Gyokeres' stock only continues to rise as the games go by and his latest performance is certain to have caught the attention of top European sides. It is not surprising to see Arsenal linked with the number nine, given they lack an out-and-out striker.
Currently, Kai Havertz leads the line at the Emirates, and Gabriel Jesus is the second choice, a player who hasn't lived up to expectations. On the other hand, Manchester United already have a couple of options in this position.
The likes of Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund are contending for minutes in the striker's role. Marcus Rashford is another player who can play in this area of the pitch as well.
Either way, Gyokeres continues to churn up the numbers, having scored 23 goals and bagged four assists in 17 matches across competitions this campaign.
Ruben Amorim reacts to Viktor Gyokeres transfer rumors, amid Manchester United and Arsenal links
Sporting manager Ruben Amorim has been announced as Manchester United head coach following Erik ten Hag's departure. The Portuguese tactician is set to take over at Old Trafford from November 11.
Another player who could be on his way from Portugal to England is Viktor Gyokeres. Amid links with Arsenal and Manchester United, Amorim was asked whether the striker would also follow him to Old Trafford.
He responded (via Standard):
"Gyokeres is a Sporting player, which is a great club, he did a lot for it, he was in the second division. He just has to stay and finish the season [there].”
Gyokeres is certainly not going to be a cheap buy, with the attacker contracted with his current employers till the summer of 2028. He's currently valued at a whopping €70 million.
