Micah Richards explains why he feels sorry for Arsenal superstar who reminds him of David Silva

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards expressed sympathy for Arsenal midfielder Martin Odegaard as he believes the Norwegian is unlikely to win the 'Player of the Season' award despite his brilliant performances.

It goes without saying that Martin Odegaard has been a huge revelation with Arsenal in the Premier League this term. The Norwegian has been one of the most vital figures behind the Gunners' title push so far, contributing 15 goals and eight assists in 34 appearances.

Odegaard proved himself once again when Mikel Arteta's men clashed with Newcastle United in the English top flight yesterday (7 May 7), scoring a brilliant goal to lead his side to a vital 2-0 victory.

After watching the Norwegian dazzle once again at St. James Park, Richards couldn't help but rue the fact that the Arsenal midfielder will likely lose the Premier League POTY award to Erling Haaland.

The Englishman wrote in his column for the Daily Mail:

“It’s a strange thing to have sympathy for someone after you have watched them light up your Sunday but that was my first feeling for Martin Odegaard. If it hadn’t been for Erling Haaland, Arsenal’s captain would be odds-on for Player of the Year."
He continued:
“He reminds me of David Silva in so many ways, with his quiet authority and leadership. You wouldn’t know David was in a room sometimes but on the pitch, he made you follow him through his brilliance and that is what Odegaard is doing — 15 goals from midfield (and not one penalty) is just exceptional."
"Arsenal’s business in getting Odegaard on loan, restoring his confidence and then buying him outright was a masterstroke. He’s going to get even better."

Gunners goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was at the top of his game during the 2-0 win over the Magpies, denying the hosts on multiple occasions and finishing the game with a clean sheet. Ramsdale's brilliance was noticed by his manager who hailed his impact in his post-match interview.

Arteta said:

"[That's] the most important thing [keeping the ball out of the net]! I think he's been brilliant. It's been a big jump for him from where he was to play for Arsenal and the standards that are required. He has really improved in every aspect, especially in his consistency, in his life, in his maturity, how he can read the game, so really pleased with him."
