Mohamed Salah snubs Jude Bellingham as his top candidates for 2024 FIFA The Best Men’s Player award comes to light
Liverpool's Mohamed Salah snubbed Jude Bellingham while voting for his top three candidates for the 2024 FIFA The Best Men's Player award, as per FIFA. Vinicius Junior won the prestigious award while the Englishman finished third.
Both players were indispensable for Real Madrid last season, helping the club win the league, the Champions League, and the Supercopa de Espana. While the Brazilian registered 24 goals and 11 assists from 39 games, Bellingham found the back of the net 23 times and set up 13 more from 42 games.
However, it wasn't enough to earn the Englishman a place in Mohamed Salah's top three players of the year. The Egyptian skipper voted for Vinicius Junior to win the award, with Rodri in second and Dani Carvajal in third place.
FIFA The Best Awards were held on Tuesday (December 17) in Doha. Ballon d'Or 2024 winner Rodri also secured a podium finish, coming second behind Vinicius Jr.
The Spanish midfielder won the Premier League last season and also lifted the Euro 2024 this summer. He won the Ballon d'Or ahead of the Brazilian, who finished second.
However, it was Vinicius who came out on top on Tuesday. Rodri received more votes from coaches and the media, but the 24-year-old was the overwhelming favorite of the national team captains.
Vinicius Junior secured 48 scoring points, while the Spaniard came second with 43. Jude Bellingham, meanwhile, registered 37 scoring points and finished third.
When does Mohamed Salah's contract with Liverpool expire?
Mohamed Salah has entered the final year of his contract with Liverpool and has yet to sign a new deal. The Egyptian is highly revered at Anfield and has been integral to the club's recent success.
Salah has scored 227 goals and set up 101 more from 372 games for the Reds so far. He has won eight trophies with the Merseyside club, including the Premier League and the Champions League.
Speaking recently to Stake.com (as cited by FourFourTwo), Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero claimed that the Egyptian has signed a two-year deal with Liverpool.
“So, I’ve read a little about this over the past few hours. As I understand, Salah’s renewed [his] contract with Liverpool for two more seasons. I think this should clear all doubts about his future. He remains a key player and a fresh contract is the best news Liverpool could receive,” Aguero said.
Mohamed Salah has registered 16 goals and 13 assists from 23 games across competitions this season.
